TAIWANESE MANUFACTURER OF integrated circuits, Via Technologies, today announced its tiny new arrival, the low powered VIA EPIA PX5000EG Pico-ITX board.

The new board is a follow up to Via’s EPIA PX10000 Pico-ITX board, which was previously the world’s smallest mass produced x86. Via says that its new offering, as well as being more heat and power efficient, also features the 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor, to form a diminutive, yet highly integrated board, which boasts a maximum power draw of only a single watt.

Vice President of Via’s Embedded Platform Division, Daniel Wu, reckons the new board brings Via’s line of embedded products “to new heights of thermal and energy efficiency in an extremely miniaturised form factor”, in a full x86 system that fits neatly into the palm of a person’s hand.

To be more accurate about its specs, the Pico-ITX manages to cram a full feature set into only 10cm x 7.2cm, including both LVDS/DVI and VGA support, integrated 5.1 channel audio, fast 100/10 Ethernet, both IDE and S-ATA drive support and up to six USB ports and a COM port.

The EPIA PX5000EG with its one watt power draw and fanless 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor also manages to support 1GB of DDR2 system memory.

Graphics also get a boost with the Via VX700 system media processor adding Via UniChrome Pro II IGP 3D/2D graphics with MPEG-2/-4 and WMV9 hardware, decoding acceleration and pin support for LVDS, DVI and VGA display configurations.

As well as all that, Via’s EPIA PX5000EG also has onboard IDE and S-ATA connectors as well as an integrated 100/10 Fast Ethernet port. Connectors are included with the board in order to support PS/2 keyboard and mouse, a multimedia connector which supports external TV-out, a video capture port interface & LPC interface (which requires an add-on card), an audio connector for line-out, line-in, mic-in, S/PDIF in and 5.1 channel audio output and a Pico-ITX power connector. µ

Perhaps one day we'll see this technology go into more powerful smartphones that will be able to run x86 software and applications (read windows xp and other apps). And with flash technology development on the increase, all with no moving parts.

Also we could see these things integrated into automobiles with some implementations controlling EVERY one of the car's functions through a gui on a screen. No more steering wheels, no buttons anywhere, just the pc.

Can anyone say driving your car with a ps3/xbox controller?

Just make sure yuh running RAID0 and have a CPU clocked to the hill so yuh could hit Ctl-Atl-Del rapidly in succession until you get past the light house XD
