No Thermal Paste on an AMD chip
« on: May 01, 2008, 05:05:38 PM »
I now remember when my bro put on my heatsink after I installed my mobo, we didn't use any thermal paste. Is that a good or bad idea?

My CPU doesn't run hot or anything just was wondering about that.

I know the heatsink has a sticky area that I guess is to hold on to the processor but yeah what y'all think?

That 'sticky area' is actually factory-applied thermal compound.  If you used the stock heatsink, then you have nothing to worry about.
Of course, those of us possessed of a certain level of l33tness would take off that feeble compound and use Arctic Silver 5.

Ohhh so that's what it was heheh...yeah I will keep that in mind when I decide to go all cooling crazy.

The days seem to be getting hotter and hotter, my room's temp is readin 32 degs man..32!!

Cpu is running at 25 deg and the mobo at 40 deg but thanks for the tip

Put another way if no thermal compound was used, the cpu would have smoked A LONG TIME AGO.

If the weather can have the thermometer for my room reading 32 degrees, I think we will soon have to get mini AC units to bolt onto our PCs so they won't get fried from this crazy dry season heat....

There are VERY FEW chips that can function for more than a few seconds without a HSF these days (at least of the x86 variety). Via C7 chips can, and PERHAPS the upcoming Intel Atom depending on frequency. However any Core, Core 2, Core 2 Quad, Athlon XP/64/X2/X3/X4 would FRY and die a horrible death... if the machine didn't have a fail safe and cut off when it reached the threshold temp.

lol @ fry and die.. lol, with the cpu's we have currently, it's pretty much insane to install one without a heatsink, much less a heatsink without thermal grease.
