Windows 7 vs XP Performance Shoot-Out

After I compared the performance of Windows 7 with that of Windows Vista , a lot of readers expressed interest in seeing a comparison with the decade-old, but still popular, Windows XP. So I decided to see how each of the three operating systems compared to each other in several crucial categories. Frankly, the results were a bit surprising. While they aren't a knockout blow for Windows 7, they do show that, by some measures, XP outperforms Windows 7 on legacy hardware.

To start, I did a clean install of each OS on a 1.73-GHz Toshiba Satellite M45-S269 laptop with 1GB RAM and a 100GB hard drive. Because upgrading from XP will be of interest to businesses as well individuals, I chose to install Windows XP Professional, and stuck with the Professional edition for Vista and 7. I used 32-bit versions, since most XP installations are of that variety. For each OS version, I performed a clean installation.

I then installed Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate , Windows Live Essentials (Mail, Movie Maker , Photo Gallery , Messenger), and Picasa 3.5 , since testing a PC with no programs installed wouldn't tell much about real-world performance. Then I ran a series of tests to determine the PC's start-up and shutdown times in each OS, as well as its performance on a series of benchmark tests. I ran each test at least three times and averaged the results.

too legit to quit

my first Windows 7 and office 2007 originals

Many more to come as the changing of the guard continues.

The XP is dead, long live the XP

Liking the frustration free packaging. Not only did the developers get it right with this OS, but the Public Relations and Marketing department deserves some hearty kudos as well.

PS...does "Office Home edition" qualify as an oxymoron?

Nice meng!! I was gonna buy home premium too but our EA with Microsoft entitles staff to a complimentary key for the 32/64 version of Enterprise, in other words, the uberest version there is. I hear we have Office 2k10 serials as well so hopefully this year those should trickle down.

Has anyone gotten any problems with Windows 7 as far as Windows Live Messenger is concerned? WLM randomly cuts off without a coded error.

yeah boy, policy dictates XP on the work machines.

Only a matter of time before the hirer-ups see the light that is Windows 7.

No trouble with torrentz. MSN did play the fool a few times, requiring a reboot to fix. Has happened for a while though.

That was on RC. Gonna install final soon. Expecting more goodness.

Had a weird Outlook problem and it "automagically" fixed itself when I clicked the "check online for a solution" button.

I tell you, Windows 7 is going to put IT techs out of a job.

lawl @ put IT out of a job

when i installed vista ultimate and did windows updates and saw that windows went out and found NON generic drivers for hardware i was like WTF!! win!! lol
if 7 continues in that awesome vein then we indeed do have some things to worry about.. but also less noob calls is always a good thing.

Also... isnt automagically a linux phraze O.o... >.>

in 7, you don't start windows....windows starts you!

scary.....just now you'll come home from work, and meet the PC fired up with your favourite apps and websites already launched and waiting....with a voice over saying "you're late...."

microsoft ftw

Gentle reminder to the folks enjoying the RC (Release Candidate) that MS will start shutting down, every hour on the hour or something to that effect, starting March 1st 2010. So you've been reminded:
