10 activations per key (max) does not sound very sensible. In an organization with 500 machines, you gonna have to get 50 mak keys?

To me that defests the whole purpose of having a multiple activation key. If you choose to only take a 10 user key, then fine but definitely there is an option to get a key that spans more than just 10 activations.

Our case is proof of that alone because we have done a lot more than 10 activations.

the VAMT supposed to tell you how many times a key's been used, but I haven't started the KMS infrastructure as yet

I think 1 of the keys can be activated multiple times, but still, only 10 keys * X activations... I don't like how it sounds :(

Hello there,

Your best bet is a clean new installation to avoid any problems. Regrettably, you will have to re-install most of your programs.

Backup all of your data to an external hard drive or flash drive.

Install clean installation of Windows 7 and then keep the Windows 7 Product key. You can activate it via Phone Activation system and at the same time, the copy on the so called "old computer" *your old windows system is deactivated.
Phone Activation system
================================================
1. Click the Start button, type "SLUI.EXE 4" (without the quotation marks) in the search box, and press “Enter”.
2. Select the neatest location, and click "Next".
3. Please click "Continue" when the User Account Control dialog-box appears.
4. The Windows Activation will generate a toll-free phone number. And the installation ID will be displayed in the following format:
xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx
5. Call the number to activate Windows 7.

Let me know how it goes!

New Ubuntu eats more power than Windows 7
Don't stick 10.04 on a netbook

By Nick Farrell
Wed May 05 2010, 10:55

THE DENIZENS of Phoronix.com have been benchmarking the new Ubuntu Linux and came up with some startling conclusions about the power consumption of the operating system compared to that of Windows 7.

The outfit monitored the power consumption of a notebook and netbook when each operating system was idling at their respective desktops with all default settings and software running for each OS.

The researchers thought that Windows' better ACPI support would give it an edge over Ubuntu but they apparently were surprised when the proprietary operating system wiped the floor with the Linux OS in terms of power management.

"Out of the box" Ubuntu 10.04 LTS consumed 56 per cent more power than Windows 7 Professional

When both operating systems had Nvidia's proprietary driver installed for better GPU power management of the Green Goblin's Ion chipset, Ubuntu "Lucid Lynx" went through less power, but Windows still did better and the difference turned into a 65 per cent. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is using the Nouveau KMS driver by default for the open source Green Goblin driver and does not implement any power management support.

Fortunately for Ubuntu the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 power consumption difference between Windows and Ubuntu Linux was not nearly as large as that of the Atom 330 plus Ion-based netbook.

The ThinkPad T61 with Ubuntu consumed 14 per cent more power than Windows 7, but when both were loaded with Nvidia's binary driver that uses Powermizer and other power-savings techniques, Ubuntu consumed just nine per cent more power on average.

The netbook used for testing was an ASUS Eee PC 1201N with an Atom 330 dual-core CPU, Nvidia GeForce 9400M Ion graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 12.1-inch WXGA display, and a 250GB 5400RPM SATA HDD.

The notebook was a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, a Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M, 4GB of system memory, a 15.4-inch display, and a 100GB Hitachi 7200RPM SATA HDD.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x86_64 and Microsoft Windows 7 Professional x64 were the two operating systems tested on the two mobile PCs. ΅

Seems that MS will be pushing out that SP1 VERY soon... honestly I think 7 Win (see what I did there) and a SP unlike the past experience where an SP is a sign of maturity, wasn't as large of a step this time. That being said, many business wait on SP1 before making the leap, however I think this time, the leap would have been much shorter than they thought.

There is NOTHING that will be in the service pack that you can't get elsewhere. No new functionality whatsoever, just a collection of updates.

But yeah, there is a certain perception that comes with the term Service Pack that just seems to make people more comfortable.

Ignorance is bliss oui.

Service Packs give jaded service admins and IT managers a warm fuzzy feeling.

And with good reason

No one wants to be a beta tester for an office running 100+ business critical computers.

No probs living on the edge at home (Win 7 and ran the RC) but at the office, it's Windows XP. We just just upgraded to SP3 like a few months ago. lol

Real men running from the Windows 7 by us. The main reason is that it takes much more effort to prepare and deploy images to machines as opposed to windows xp. Also profile migration is a bit of an issue with our current setup. A few of us are beta testing 7 in the environment but as Wyatt say, its a dream home os.

The actual image creation time remains the same but there are more steps involved.Even with an answer file, 7's post install takes longer to complete as opposed to xp,  plus it needs 2 reboots instead of 1, one post restore and one for oobe prep.. Of course we're using non-oem copies of 7 whereas all of our copies of XP are oem so as such, in our case, it takes a lot more work. Plus after all that we still have to manually activate as we dont have a kms server infrastructure.

yea i'm not a now come.

good.. look up windows deployment services...

the reason being.. ghost is not designed to take advantage of the new deployment features of windows 7, wds is the only tool i know that is (dont know about any others because wds works great) this is what was designed to deploy windows vista/7/2008 and has incredible features that makes deployment a breeze...

you can customize task sequences etc making all those reboots u do unecessary, of course you will always have the activation problem but you should get a kms

You're right, wds is the shit, unfortunately I have to demo it on my test environment complete with kms. Just another in the long line of things to do, worse yet as its not a 'critical project' and only a handful or people actually using 7 at the moment.

Ghost win for xp but just making life hard with 7.

I find WDS kinda complicated, compared to what we get accustomed to in the office here (Altiris Client Management Suite, now known as Symantec Manangement Platform)

Now there's a beefy deployment tool :P

But, I surender that WDS is "free" and would work better than Ghost...

Oh and lastly, get the KMS up fast Cap'n
