Wait...shutting down?

What build are you running? MS has already started to shut down all the betas. If you're on one of the rc's, its an isolated issue as i'm running fine.

Yeah man, the PC just turns off.

"Windows did not shut down properly" error when I turn it back on.

It really seems like an issue with uTorrent, as I left it (uTorrent) off for the whole night and no problems. I first suspected my downloading as the cause, when I left the PC on last night without logging on. So nothing was running.

I'm running the RC (build 7100) x86

Maybe it's the chipset/driver? (NF4)

or maybe it's a sign of the board dying (noticed swollen capacitors the other day)

I'll report after I get the next system up and running

LOL. You HAD to point that out eh.

Netizen, are you able to run any intensive tasks on the machine at all for an extended period of time w/o SHUTTING down (thanks philo)

I'd go with the theory that the board is dying too as evidenced by the swolen capacitors.

Thanks guys, but it's really pointing to the uTorrent thing as the culprit.

Again, I left the pc on, whole night, logged in, but doing "nothing"... no downloading (not Folding on Win7 as yet)

I may try the stress test as suggested... What was that software called? LinX...

Just an update to my issue (think I should start a separate thread)

LinX finished without errors in 42min (Max CPU Temp was 62C)
Problem size 10,000
Memory 772MB
Times to run 20

So it's not a sign of the board dying after all.

I have been trying to install Windows 7 wherever humanly possible and unfortunately, been encountering a nasty error on some machines.

The installation fails at point where Windows 7 is "Expanding Files"

Tried several different rom drives. Re-burnt the disc. Booting from External USB drive (which by the way, requires arcane magics and the alignment of stars), etc.....

Still no dice.

Apparently its a problem for many online as well.

Hopefully they fix that in the final release, if not. Windows 7 may not be coming to a PC near you and not for the reason you think.

That's interesting. I've installed it on only 3 separate machines thus far but havent come across such problems.

Give us some more info, build of the culprit, machine specs, x86/64 version or if you've identified any trends in the type of machines (hardware wise) that wont take the installations.

Sorry I'm late NGW

the error you speak of is related to the DVD media you're using. I got it a couple times at first. This one's been around since the Vista installations were pre-SP1

To rectifiy, try one of the following;
  • 1. Burn the ISO at a slower speed
  • 2. Try a different burner
  • 3. Try different media

Had this problem while installing on Z-R0's PC a couple weeks ago. I totally forgot how picky MS Beta's are wrt media and burn speed. So I grabbed a better quality blank from another spindle, burnt it @ 4X, and voila, installation successful.

Also, don't rule out the fact that the drive reading the disk (on the target machine) could be dodgy

Windows 7 has RTM'd.....For real this time...
« Reply #257 on: July 22, 2009, 06:20:04 PM »
http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/07/22/windows-7-has-been-released-to-manufacturing.aspx

Quote

I am pleased to announce that Windows 7 has RTM’d!
As I mentioned previously, RTM officially happens only after sign-off occurs. What happens is a build gets designated as a RTM contender after going through significant testing and meeting our quality bar for RTM. Then, it goes though all the validation checks required for RTM including having all languages of that build completed. If all the validation checks have passed – sign-off for RTM can occur. Today after all the validation checks were met, we signed off and declared build 7600 as RTM.

Not only is RTM an important milestone for us – it’s also an important milestone for our partners. Today’s release is the result of hard work and collaboration with our partners in the industry to make Windows 7 a success. We delivered Windows 7 with a predictable feature set on a predictable timetable that allowed OEMs to focus on value and differentiation for their customers.

Our customers told us what they want (and expect) and we defined those specific experiences and then built features to support them (like HomeGroup and the Windows Taskbar enhancements). Our customers also told us that “fundamentals” on both the hardware and software side was extremely important. Windows 7 today runs great on the broadest array of hardware types ranging from netbooks to high-end gaming machines. We worked closely with OEMs so that their PCs delight customers with the new features in Windows 7.

...and its already available from a select few sources. Happy hunting, b1tches :)

Boom. Confirmation is all over the internets now. Its done.

Here's my install of the 32bit version

As you see, its the Enterprise edition and is activated. There was no option to choose a version (ie home premium etc)

The 64 bit version gave me 4 choices though, ranging from Home Basic to Ultimate.

Giving that a shot. Will report back later.
