Having a dedicated soundcard also reduces CPU overhead. Now the CPU doesn't have to manage the sound stack, which, in Vista and Win7 is MUCH more complex than XP.

On-board sound is slowly catching up, but it will be quite a while till its on par with them Creative cards.

So, in short, uber sound-card = more winnage in terms of overall system performance. Especially in games.

does it translate into a higher 3dmark score?

or fps in game?

Like what? a 10% jump with the live?

Well 3dmark doesnt have sound during testing, so no improvements there. Any dedicated sound card just offloads sound processing from the list of tasks that the cpu has to handle. As for the %age framerate increase you actually get, I cant say. But that's just a side in my book. For me, its all about the audio quality. Any boost in system performance is just the icing on the cake.

As the last line says, a workaround will surely surface well before it is released. That is horsecrap, but at least there's no 3 program max restriction anymore. I imagine THAT would have been a bit harder to workaround, though not impossible.

who cares about starter edition anyway? It won't be publicly available. Just for oems and is targeted @ netbooks.

I don't expect to see any self respecting techie/gamer running starter edition. do you?

In other news, let my windows 7 expire recently to see how it behaves without being activated. Definitely less of a nag than vista.

Windows 7 continues to impress.

Today, installed the OS on a hard drive in one machine, moved the hard drive to another machine and it booted up, redetected drivers and functioned smooth as butter.

XP or Vista would typically BSOD after such a transplant. Giving no end of trouble.

Kudos Microsoft, Kudos again.

Also, the recipient PC had very different hardware components than the donor.

Only one driver Windows 7 wasn't able to "auto update" for itself from the internet. The audio driver (no surprise there)

Only driver I could find online was a Windows XP driver. Tried it, and it worked.

I don't know what Microsoft feeding the Windows 7 programming team, but I want some.

I've been asking myself the same question ever since the first public beta came out in early January...and I must say, I am seriously considering springing for it for my main machine. I mean, of course the others will most likely see an acquired version, but i'm actually considering buying this one...a first since Windows 98! Yeah. It's that good. I've never been so impressed with a pre-release OS before. Driver compatibilty is ALMOST top notch as well as performance and reliability. Superb. The virtualization is just the icing on the cake, which comes in extremely handy with programs that dont work with like Exchange 2003 adons for AD.

lol, more than just buy it. Evangelize it!

The only down side, is with all of this wondrously smooth operation, Windows 7 might just start putting IT folks out of jobs.

Too much of a good thing.

Time to look for a side line business, like selling coconuts around the savannah.

The only thing I worried about is the final price for the Ultimate version.  Also, I'm wondering just
how many PCs I can install one copy on.  In my case, I have SIX PCs (including two laptops) that could do
with some Win 7 luvin.

you does have to activate the current one right?

if so try installing it bare to a machine activating and then resealing it.

image that bad boy with acronis or sum and see if you can put it onto another machine, it may work, worth a shot.

i willing to bet you can only install it to one machine legitimately

'Resealing'?

Elaborate on that.  I thought you meant actually putting the disc back in the case and resealing the case, lol.

I'm pretty talking he's talking about the Microsoft System Preparation tool that is used to prepare a machine to be imaged, which regenerates a new SID after pasting the image.

That'll cause the activation to reset as well... and like I said previously, the VLK schema is different for Vista and Windows 7.

What you'll need is a MAK key, and that my friends, is not as easy to come by... yet

running sysprep, is what the factory does use after installing software in a system so that the user can enter their details etc.

but cap on the ball you may need a vlk to pull that off properly, so that it wont need activation, i use a vlk xp so that may be why i never run into trouble with that particular procedure

yuh have a link ready by chance with that? *googles anyway*
