Child dies trying to recreate scene from Naruto

An Everett-area family is in mourning over a 10-year-old boy who died after being buried alive by his playmates.

In a statement, the family of Codey Porter says he died peacefully at 3:35 p.m. on Monday with his family by his side.

The bizarre incident, which happened on Saturday, may have been sparked by a television cartoon.

Family members describe Codey, a fifth grader at Silver Firs Elementary School in Everett, as smart and imaginative. Unfortunately, it may have been his imagination that led to his death.

"Really articulate. He's got a really good imagination too. He's just not a regular 10-year-old," said Joshua Quantrille, 30, who is Codey's half-brother.

Codey was playing with Quantrille's three sons and several other children Saturday in the backyard of a family friend's home.

"They watch a cartoon where there were like sandmasters or something. They can manipulate sand or something like that," said Quantrille. "He came up with an idea if he were to do this, then he would be able to be one of them. They're all under 10, so a pretty crazy imagination, you know. They were like hey, OK."

The cartoon "Naruto" shows the characters using sand as a tool and weapon and could have been what Codey and the others were trying to mimic when he was buried, headfirst, in a sandbox in the backyard of the house.

Quantrille said Codey was buried roughly from his head to his chest. At some point, he began thrashing around, but the children apparently thought he was playing.

Eventually they figured out something was wrong. They pulled Codey out and called the adults inside the home, who administered CPR until an aid car arrived.

On Monday, Codey's classmates at Silver Firs Elementary in Everett tried to understand what has happened to the fifth grader. The principal describes Codey as a very bright student with a lot of friends. The principal also sent home a letter with students so that their parents would be informed.

And a repeating point is that the difference between TV and Reality is something that can easily be lost on a child.

They are definitely more predisposed to whim and fancy than an adult and TV/anime/etc.. can feed their imagination with detrimental effect as illustrated above.

Really sad story there.

In a perfect world, parents will just hover over their kids every waking moment like the blimp over Trinidad. In reality, kids often find themselves with time unsupervised. They don't need much to get into trouble.

Crixx I find you being a bit insensitive man. Nobody trying to attack anime or saying it's anime at fault or ban Naruto or something.
Kids lack deductive reasoning as well as the knowledge to make proper deductions. It's just like Baego says. I don't think anything was wrong with him, he just had an imagination that was a bit more out there than normal. There's always outliers for anything, with the vast majority in the middle.

Very sad that it happened. There's really only so much parents can do, they can't think of every possibility from a cartoon and tell their kids its just make believe and dangerous.

I concur. It was a sad thing to happen, but, in this instance, there really wasn't much the parents could have done in this instance. By the time they caught on, it was far too late.

As much as I loathe Naru-tard, even I am hoping that this incident doesn't cause some kind of backlash on it. Heck...if they did, they'd probably have to start censoring all instances of sand from now on....

Problem in America is that children are given too much freedom at an early age , such accidents will occur no matter what .

the reason iam being harsh is because the americans ALWAYS need a scape goat, always hadda blame someone or something else for their actions and for the ills in their society.

Yes i believe they will try to make naruto an issue, just like they have blamed gta for shootings and  nfs for speeding.

and the reason iam being harsh again is because iam almost certain this crap doesnt happen in japan.
i mean, they are ultra inundated in every way with anime and yu wont hear of kids loping off peoples heads or stickiing live wires on dere hands and yelling chidori an electrocuting someone (hmmm....).

BUt they made sure and mentioned that it COULD have been naruto, lol like sand +death must equal something in the media kids were watching, so lets take class action against cartoon network or tv tokyo!

i wouldnt be surprised AT ALL if/when this happens very soon.

and trini is right about american kids, they does low dem to much

dem eh know nuttin bout cut tail

in trinidad if dat small man had live after dat incident
he an he lil friends woulda get de dreadest cut tail of dey life!!

ah lyin??

I'm beginning to wonder what you feel more concerned about, Crixx. The kid who died, or Naruto.

Seriously....you really think his parents give two s**ts about that cartoon right now?

I think burying their son and trying to overcome their grief is just a little higher up on their priority list right now than looking to blow TV Tokyo to Kingdom Come, (which they aren't really looking to do, read the article), don't you think?

I'd have to agree. Backyard Wrestling is a testament to that.

Children are very impressionable at that age. If they see something awesome, no two ways about it, they'll do it, (or at least try) even if you, as a parent, tell them no.

So, I'm just going to set the record straight here and now.
It's not the parent's fault.
It's not the anime's fault.

If you want something to blame, blame the curiousity of the highly impressionable children who didn't really know better, and, sadly, paid the price for it in the end.

Actually I agree with crixx here Neo, I can't say the parents aren't to blame even if it's not 100% meaning whilst a parent cannot always be aware of what their children are doing, in this day and age, its' irresponsible for a parent to leave their children unattended for more than 5 minutes at a time. I'm sorry, that's just my opinion. If the parents were making frequent and regular checks on them this would NOT have occured. And also I do beleive like most anything else, they will try to put the blame for this on someone/something else when they realized their own negligence was a CONTRIBUTING factor in this tragedy. Anyone want to take bets for this?

Dude are you kidding? They were 9 years old and were in the backyard. Did your parents not ever leave you unattended for more than 5 minutes at that age when you were in a safe environment with friends? It's not like he was a year old and liable to eat poisonous mushrooms or something.
I don't see how anyone can be blamed in this situation. I'm generally all for parents not blaming others and taking responsibility for their kids but they aren't affixing blame and there really wasn't much they could have done realistically.
One follow-up story.
And another

Yeah I can see they're already calling for Kishi's head. Won't be long now...*sarcasm* :shakehead:

Say what you might Exar, my take on it holds, I personally know ppl tht left their 8 year old unattended in the company of even older kids and the end result wasn't something I care to repeat, regardless of how you cut it, if the parents don't look after the children then who do you suppose will do it? the Police? the government? if I were a parent and that happened to me better believe i'd damn well blame myself!

The kid was ten. That would most certainly be true if the kid was between infancy and post-kindergarten, but I really don't think the parents would be keeping him on a leash at that age.

Well, as much as people would say 'OMG it's the fault of the cartoon! Ban it!!!', the plain fact of the matter is that there is no one to blame but the children themselves. I would be more understanding if they were like 4-5 years old or something, but TEN? The boy should have been MORE than aware of what is real or not by then, at least when it came to anime.

I mean, when I was in the most impressionable years of my life (the age of McGuyver), it's not like I went around trying to make all sorts of gadgets out of random household items. I understood that it was just a show, and that there are things that you just wouldn't DO.

As long as people insist on blaming the kitchen sink for an individual's actions (unless forced to do so), then incidents like this will continue to happen. I feel sorry for the child's parents, but to blame anything but the child for this incident is just pure bs.

But then, this is America we're talking about here...
Nagamete iru dake ja, itsumademo te ni dekinai...nagamete iru dake ja, kimi no mono ni wa naranai...

ssssssSSSSSSS...That's a nice everything you got there....SSSSSSS.

Which brings it back to the point, if at the 'impressionable' age of 3-8 the parents don't ensure that the child imagination or not knows the difference between a cartoon and reality then who's gonna help define that for them? hmm I know the TV... the exact same baby sitter that he tried to imitate...

...I...I don't understand the need for people to assert blame in this circumstance. It's one of those unfortunate circumstances of life. He's dead and that's all there is to this. Sorry.
What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.
