ADVICE on ASUS Board
« on: March 04, 2008, 12:03:31 PM »
Ok so heres the skinni....

I have an ASUS P4V800 DX
supports my Socket 478 3.6Ghz Processor...
AGP Video Card plus it comes with a PCI Express 16X slot
igot an EVGA 8800GTS to go on the boards PCIE 16X slot

the dilema
i am reading the manual for the board which clearly states that the board has a PCIE16X slot but then in brackets it says
(4X mode only) the board is rumored to be able to sli an agp n pcie card.... i am hoping that if you are using sli with both agp n pcie then the pcie will run at 4x...

ne thoughts ne one?

the alternative is of course get a more updated board to power the beast but i want to be able to use it in the mean time whilst i save for the ultimate board....

SLI with PCI-E and AGP is laughable at best. It eh gonna happen. Just use the 8800 until you can afford a better board...which you WILL need since that card will perform like a 4x agp card, if it works at all.

To expand on what capt said, the slot is most likely 16x physically. Meaning electrical characteristics and length, however has a throughput equal to a 4x PCIe slot. As for SLI with AGP, not even laughable, try impossible. As Capt. said just hang unto the 8800 and get a better mobo. Thing is all Core numerals run on the LGA 775 or is it 761, bleh, well you get the idea. I'm hinting to the fact that it also doesn't make sense to keep the processor or ram on that mobo cause it makes much more sense to upgrade to something capable of using a Penryn processor. In a nutshell, ditch the rig, keep the card.

but that is actually the direction headed... i like the sound of quad core in the morning....

n believe u me i love mi 8800, i was just concerned about the performance of the card on such a limited board...
once it runs ill post some 3dmark scores n see...

Very interesting however i dont think this board supports that, not going to find out thought cause the 8800gts runs fine although i noticed some reduced performance while running cod4. i did some research n found out that i needed to flash my bios to a more updated version. i got an instant jump in performance there. my 3dmark scores went from 8500 - 8600 to 10000 - 10500 points i reformatted so i kinda forgot to save the pix oh well that was for xp i am now going to vista.
as it stands my rig will be using the
ASUS P4V800DX
3.0 Ghz DDR1 400Mhz
2.8 Ghz Dual Processor (32 Bit) Prescott
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB Card...
will post screenies with 3dmark scores laters....

Interesting....3ghz ddr1? A dual core prescott on a socket 478 board?

10,000 on stock 640gts running on 4x PCI-E?

Is it just me?

You seriously didnt just compare a core 2 to a pentium 4 dey. I KNOW that eh wa happen there.

On a p4, ht or not, them scores NOT believeable and at stock no less. I HAVE to see supporting screenshots to believe that.

Not forgetting we talking about a 4x PCI-E board and a 3dmark that is highly cpu dependent.

10K on a P4 boy....?   Hmmmm...I dunno...
I had to work some SERIOUS OC-voltage magic to break 10K with the E6600.....and that is WITH a 8800 GTS.

How ironic that "i reformatted so i kinda forgot to save the pix oh well"...... :laughing7:
Renders any 3DMark claim you made there kinda null and void.

WHOA!
i didnt compare them! :ko:

i just say that it shows up as 2, like in task manager and such so it can be mistaken by someone less technically endowed

as for the scores, i had put 03/05 cuz i thought it may be possible to pull them in the older 3dmarks03/05

That's a via chipset - no sli. sli wasn't designed for agp - unless via has their own proprietary driver (which i doubt they'd keep up to date).

while 16 slots is better, consider the p35 - when crossfire was enabled, it ran xfire in 16+4 configurations. it didn't differ toooo greatly from 16+16 in x38. I don't think you'll lose much performance. I'd just be wary of the chipset.
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

So with a P4 he's "hitting 10 easy" while with an X2 5000+ @ 2.6ghz barely passing 9k...yeah...that makes sense.

As for the memory, its so cheap nowadays that overybuying memory is a moot point. Someone also mentioned that 1gig wouldn't hold his 3dmrk score back. I can confirm this as i've already tried running benchies with 1, 2 and 4 gigs with similar results. But it goes without saying that this is a SYNTHETIC benchmark that should not be viewed as the be all and end all of pc performance testing/gauging.
