Hmm ... so many games ...

PC Games

Doom (I could hear the stage one music as I type this)
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
Total Annihilation (spiritual prequel to Supreme Commander)
Road and Track Presents Need for Speed (the original)
Need for Speed 2 SE (has probably the sweetest rides from the entire series ... with videos)
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit (the PC version had tons of crazy modded rides that you can import ... and cops)

Teranigma An ARPG that is right up there with ChronoTrigger in terms of quality and storytelling, a must play that was unfortunately never released stateside.

There's also...

Yoshi's Island
Mario RPG
Earthbound
Act Raiser 2
Kirby's SuperStar (play with a friend, play with a friend, play with a friend)
Radiant Silvergun
Shining Force 2 (sRPG with an endearingly classic fantasy feel)
Gunstar Heroes (and its GBA remake Gunstar Superheroes)
King of Fighters '98.
...and I'm sorry...this is a pretty old one...but the original Rolling Thunder. It's simple but damn is it a good challenge. River City Ransom is another that's older than what you're looking for but good.

What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.

SNES

Donkey Kong Country - Awesome platform game with stunning graphics for its time
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Equally good sequel
Actraiser - Nice mix of action and city building/management/strategy
SimCity - The SNES version was quite good with an advisor who gave suggestions every so often
NHL '94 - Probably the purest hockey game ever made and introduced one-timers. EA Sports at its best.
PGA Tour Golf - I spent hours playing this game and had my 3-press swing down to a science.
Super Mario World - Excellent platformer with a really nice steelpan remix in a secret stage.
Killer Instinct - Top quality graphics for its time in a black cartridge. The bonus audio soundtrack CD was sweet.
Top Gear 2 - One of the sweetest racing games ever made. Upgrading your car and using nitros during races added to its appeal. I especially liked the little messages that popped up when you passed someone - "Eat my dust"

A sort of sequel to Shinobi for PS2. Nightshade is NOT an easy game. Got it on sale for less than 9 US brand new and bought it as part of my research project for the female heroine in my next project. Hotsuma is unlockable as well. Some ppl may not like it....its really designed for the Shinobi fans of the sort. Really enjoy this title.

If you want some REAL difficulty i highly suggest this title

severely overlooked by many. The Epitome of jetpack action right here. Once you learn to fly this damn thing you dont touch the ground again...period. Dread title.
an AMAZING acheivement with the jetpack mechanics but also VERY difficult to master.
If you use it "normaly" you basically go "oom" in about 3 seconds....if you boost properly it refills itself....if you do it correctly 20 times in a row you hit Mobius mode where you are practically on superboost for a while.

The game that made me love RTS was Dune for PC. I wish I could find that game to play it again it was so much fun.

Another PC goldie oldie was Golden Axe. Spent many hours sharing a keyboard with my big bro playing that game lol

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

I know it's been called a few times already but LEGEND OF ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME my fav. game ever. Star fox 64. Most well known 64 games actually. Halo 1 was my first FPS that i played. Final Fantasy 5 (ridiculously hard but i beat it on my second try afta i gave up the first time). Also, Metroid Prime 1. Some others that i can't think of.
