I am liking that TechReport format a whole lot. I have been doing a lot of research with respect to local
pricing, but the variations from vendor to vendor is so vast that it doesn't really seem like a good idea for now.
I say we go with the foreign pricing, since we can actually order what we see online now.

The proverbial 'monkey-wrench in the works' with that format however, is the VAT/duties thing. The final
landed prices would be a little hard to estimate. Worst case would be to include VAT and duty and work
back from there.

With that in mind arc, could we then use a particular local vendor or a handful of local vendors for pricing as an average meaning we use their prices as a reasonable expectation of the others and go with that? cause things like HDs and optical drives are QUITE affordable locally PLUS you have the benefit of a warranty. Also whilst I agree importing is an option, not everyone has a skybox and the prices as you did mention duties/vat vary which creates instability in pricing. We can vote on a few local known outfits with parts and use them as our reference.

especially since people are buying machines locally all the time, it will still be a good point of reference of what is available on the island and at what price.

I also see Arc's point. There isn't a local "pricewatch" to make things easy. To get that sort of information from the net takes a few clicks on one website. The same data locally would require perusing reseller excel spreadsheets for each computer store on the island or worse yet, calling them to find out what's in stock and at what price.

Tom's Hardware has also updated their System Builder Marathon to include some of the newer hardware.
Quite a good read in of itself. It seems that all these sites have done the work for us.

I eh know arc... THG's idea of low/mid/high/ridiculous pricing kinda HIGH for a trini... 900USD for a LOW end... 2000USD for MID?

MADNESS... the TR site's 500/1000/1500 is much more in line with a Trini budget. But still nice for performance references.

Welll I dont know how a 3870 and 500gig falls into the "low cost" bracket. Sure they're priced well but I wont go as far to say low cost. Perhaps a reduction to a 3850/9600gt and 320/250 gig drive would bring the grand total to a more manageable level.

And don't forget, they eh even start to talk about display yet!

I know what you mean (my beast of a PC is considered just 'midrange'), but don't fret. Tom's Hardware have now updated their $500 US PC.
Even in the low cost segment, it seems that Intel is the more viable option.

I agree that their categorisations are a bit skewed.
Low-end should be in the $500-$900 US range. Mid-range should be in the $900-$1500-$2000 US range, and high-end over $2500 US.

yeah had read up on that a few days ago, the 8800GS at a nice price point, a whole 30 dollars less than the 9600GT (by tiger) not bad, i had seen a 9600GT on newegg for 149 i suppose short of being able to had that on a budget the 8800GS is a win card.

As I said it doesn't include shipping, tax (if in some US states) and other components. Not to mention that someone who can afford that would prolly opt for getting it pre-fabbed from alienware, falcon, etc so they get a warranty and don't have to deal with troubleshooting themselves. The price to BUILD this would be at least a couple $x000USD to be done right. So sure it's peanut money for some, but then buying a solid gold toilet for 80k USD is also peanuts for some ppl, so what's you point really?

Nice find. Good write up there. Of course for us Trinis that 500 US build would swell to about 800 US
when you consider all the shipping/Customs fees. Still, that's a good bit of gaming bang for the buck
with that Intel system.

Thats a good article and a good rig. It would be interesting to see the price performance between that and other more expensive rigs. Say one for $1250.00
