Quad-core temps
« on: October 17, 2007, 03:20:31 AM »
So I upgraded my CPU to a Q6600.  *grins*

I'm a bit concerned about the temperatures however.
These are my current idle temps:

From Everest

and from Core Temp

These are the load temps

The BIOS however, reports just one 'CPU Temp' of 44 degrees Celsius.  Full load temps vary for the 4 cores between 67-71 degrees Celsius.
I realize that this particular CPU is rated at 105 W so the temps will be higher than a Core 2 Duo, but all around the net I'm getting conflicting info.
Intel has specified a 'T c' value of 62.2 degrees Celsius for this CPU revision (B3), but I'm not quite sure what that means.

Can anyone else with a Q6600 record their temps and post it here for comparison?

Stock cooler?  Oh HELL no!!!

I'm using my trusty Zalman CNPS9500.

As for the E6600 and Asus mobo, very soon you shall see it for sale on this very forum. :happy0203:
I just need to 'untweak' the BIOS back to more respectable settings first.

1. Unfortunately, when you're buying from Amazon, you can't specify which revision CPU you want.  Whats the difference though?
4. Oh I intend to.

g0 stepping seems to give the best OC performance... but short of calling the seller and asking for it, it go be hard to acquire.

and steups at getting exact same HSF as me.... at least get the Ultima 90!!

When daniboy79 got the same Antec 900, did I complain?

Yeah, I did some research and found this out.  Apparently the G0 revision has a 95 Watt power envelope, whereas the B3 is set
at 105 Watts.  So now I understand Prowl's insistence on the G0.  It doesn't make much difference to me as I have a very capable
PSU, and I do not plan on running my system OC'ed all the time.  That said though.....

I realise this, which is why I ordered that HSF.  It will compensate very nicely for that extra heat.

So I got my new HSF (the Thermalright) and installed it (with 2 x 120 mm fans in 'push-pull'), and was utterly dismayed when I
found that my idle and load temps were actually HIGHER than what I was getting with the Zalman HSF.

HUH!!? ???

Of course it was off to the internets to find out WTF was really happening,
and became even MORE dismayed to learn that some of the Ultra-120 Extremes
come with a not-so-flat base (where the HSF makes contact with the CPU heatspreader).
This HSF is a NIGHTMARE to install, so you can imagine my frustration in removing it.
Each time you interfere with this HSF, you are required to completely remove the motherboard.  Not cool.

I cleaned the base and set it on a flat glass surface, and sure enough, I could actually
rock the bleddy thing back and forth a little.  So at least I confirmed what I read online.
Its a good thing I had the Zalman to fall back on, because now I need to have the base of this
HSF machined to a perfectly flat and mirror-smooth finish...like the Zalman.

Does anyone know where I can get this done...and the price?

Well it would appear that both of us have that requirement. I really never fine my temps were any lower, even when I had my Ultra 120 Extreme on my 4200+.

I am going to talk to daniboy about lapping mine.

At least on my AMD rig there is no motherboard unmounting each time I decide to take off my HSF...

i arredy described how to do it, and it is EASY.

...starting with a 200 Grit grain sand paper working your way up > 400 > 600 >1000 grit.

use the same piece of glass, lay the coarse sandpaper on it, douse it with water, then carefully in a circular motion, begin the lapping (move the HSF over the sandpaper)

you will need to frequently check the base, when you see an even wear, STOP. move to the next finer grit paper. each few passes, stop and clean off the base to check... don't forget to keep adding water when it dries up. now you don't want to remove too much material, cuz yu're gonna reduce the heat-sink mass, but more importantly, you may reduce the clamping force of the bracketry holding down that sucker!

work your way up to the 1000 grit, and if you real board, end up with 2000 grit or toothpaste! now you can reinstall!!
