Essentailly, EA now owns Bioware and Pandemic. The deal cost EA "up to $620 million in cash" paid to the "stockholders of VG," as well as an "additional $155 million in equity to certain employees" of the corporation.

EA's Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello seemed suitably pleased with the acquisition, as he expressed his confidence in the companies' assured contributions to EA's dominance in the industry:

These are two of the most respected studios in the industry and I’m glad to be working with them again. They’ll make a strong contribution to our strategic growth initiatives on quality, online gaming and developing new intellectual properties. We also expect this will drive long-term value for our shareholders.

Bioware CEO Ray Muzyka expressed his own satisfaction with the deal, stating with confidence that "this vision is consistent with BioWare’s focus on crafting the highest quality story-driven games in the world" and that the decision "will enable us to further the careers of the passionate, creative and hard working teams at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin."

What about Mass Effect though? Remember this game is supposed to be the 1st in a trilogy. I wonder how this

Mass Effect 2, only for...XBox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, PS2, N-gage, Mobile Phone, PC, N64 and Sega Genesis. Coming soon!

Seconded. I'm pretty sure that if Crytek (who EA now owns) coulda properly port Crysis on consoles,
EA woulda make them rush it and bring it on ALL of them too. Exclusivity is like a cussword to EA.

Exactly. Especially if you're trying to sell consoles. Sony has suffered greatly this current generation because of all the exclusives they've lost.
If they were to lose some more really big franchises (like Metal Gear Solid for example), a lot of consumers won't see the need to buy a PS3, especially in light of the
fact that the Xbox 360 has the bigger library, and better online service.

Not having exclusives is bad for business, if your business is selling consoles of course.

Right now there are a lot of Sony fans that are FURIOUS that Ace Combat 6 has shown up on the Xbox 360 as an exclusive (for now at least).
Really wanna play it that bad? Then get an Xbox 360. Simple. I find myself in just such a predicament with Metal Gear Solid 4.

EA on the other hand is 'good' (if you can say that at all) for the consumer because of their penchant for multiplatform releases. For a lot of titles
however, the quality of those releases is debatable. That is what lies at the heart of this issue.

In the short term this might be a good thing.. : Mass Effect PC for sure...

Hopefully EA won't touch Bioware's work , only change their strategy a bit eg. simultaneous launch on PC, PS3/360 which won't hurt their games TOO much...

If they end up murdering Bioware's quality , the buyover will make no sense as the fanbase will be gone and money will be harder to come by .

I'd imagine RPG gamers are a more discriminating breed who can and will vote with their money . If EA screws up , we'll make them pay .

Once again : it COULD be a good thing , KOTOR was never going to have a sequal by bioware , neither Neverwinter Nights or any intellectual property not Bioware produced, we might get the best of both worlds thanks to EA.

I'm not sure what dreamland you're living in that makes you think Bioware has ANY say in the making of KOTOR3 =p

Last I checked Lucasarts still maintains an iron grip on the Star Wars franchise. Don't count on them handing their most lucrative IP to EA. At all. Ever.
