A teenager charged with stealing a cellular phone from Congress of the People candidate Nicole Dyer-Griffith will be sentenced on Friday.Selwyn Rennie, 17, of Belmont, pleaded guilty to larceny of a Motorola V3 cell, valued at $3,000, when he appeared before Port of Spain Magistrate Christine Maharaj-Brown in the Eleventh Court yesterday. The court heard from court prosecutor, ag Insp Sharon Webster-Gulston, that on Monday around 1.15 p.m., Dyer-Griffith was walking along Robert Street in Woodbrook, when two men approached her and snatched the phone. While the men were running in an easterly direction on Robert Street, Dyer-Griffith raised an alarm and alerted police officers who were on patrol in the area. The officers subsequently held Rennie after a short chase.A call was made to Dyer-Griffith's cell and it was heard ringing in Rennie's front left pocket.Rennie was then taken to the Woodbrook Police Station where he was charged. When asked by Maharaj-Brown if he had anything to say before being sentenced, Rennie, who had no pending matters or previous convictions, said, "There was another person with me and he did not get any punishment."Rennie told the court he lived with his mother and step father, "and my mother knows I am here (court)".Maharaj-Brown asked Rennie his age and when told he was 17, the magistrate asked the court to locate Rennie's mother."I want your mother to be present. I am deterring sentencing and remanding you to the Youth Training Camp," Maharaj-Brown said.PC Ian Caldeira of the Woodbrook Police Station laid the charge.
