That is why, when it comes to GATE, it's easiest to go through UWI....

My 2nd year fees that I had to actually pay for is coming up to $395 (including my late registration fees). Everything else is covered by GATE.

Well, with Gate, all people heard was "free tuition" but in reality they had to pay for exam fees, which were jacked up to kinna compansate. Their reasoning probably was, "well dey eh hadda pay tuition no more so they could more dan pay a lil extra in exam fees and we go keep some for weself nah, no seen hoss". But all anyone hears is the "free" part and jump in head first.

Whey I wish I had made a post about which place to go to SBCS or SAM before I signed up , from the comments it looks like SBCS was the way to go.
Either way I signed up and paid already and a friend of mine goes there and attests that they do a good job, so will stay. 
But one thing I will add is that I for one love the concept of GATE and most likely without it a degree would be very far from reach or not even entirely in my thoughts.


One last thing I could sign up for that 30-40 percent thing now??? I paid my bill already and would love to get that discount for next month.

yea warone just go into sams admin office n check Ian for the application form...but note though..that the phone line must be registered in your name..if its not u'll have to go into a tstt office to transfer the line to ur name

love GATE  or hate it, im thankful i was able to use it...

if it wasn't for GATE  I may not have had my degree right now, granted real people waste time in uwi...but MANY non slackers (myself included) were thankful for the lil financial help....

i agree with building character, and balancing time, but nothing is wrong with getting a lil assist here and there...

and now i even hear postgrad may be free now too....

What a pity at all this bacchanal with GATE....

I starting SAM's second year and was greeted with news that GATE may be pulled....a very harsh blow...
But it seems to be stabilised for the 2nd year students as i last week filled out my gate form...

But sad for my good friend...he now starting..not in a well financial situation..helped much by GATE..registered...
and having this news at orientation...

i think he was reffering to the instution not the examing body.
The institutions themselves have to pay the same exams fees to whom-so-ever (assuming they have remained the same) but they raise it so that they can make 'a lil raise' on top of the original fee. i.e. 100 pounds for an exam, goes to 200 pounds and they make 100 pounds profit.

Well, sad to say it, but these schools have one primary goal: Turn a profit...and they are just gouging out students who want to get a degree next to their name in the process.

That was the main reason I didn't go to SBCS, because I know that fees would have come up to nearly as much as doing a degree in UWI without GATE (i.e: around $50000 for my entire program).

So you spend one way or the other - either spend 2 years to do A'Levels and head UWI and pay less fees, or spend $$$ with the private institutions. With that said, I know that certain fields may be better to do in these institutions, but go with what your pockets can handle.

when we paying the exam fees

we have to pay it in pounds directly to sams, with either a bank draft or cash

the draft is made out to sams itself so its very possible that they doin what was suggested here

i called them today again to find out about the situation concerning the GATE..the person I spoke to said that we are now GATE approved so we won't have to pay money for yr1..she said though..that it was a verbal agreement with the ministry and sams at the moment and they are expecting an offical letter from them stating this now..so hooray no tuition money to rake out! whew!..lol..
I asked about the samstudents.com website...she said the guy whose doing it shud have it up by this evening ...knowing them it mite be 2moro lol...guess we will see
