thermal paste. is brand really important?
« on: August 17, 2007, 10:17:57 PM »
i see reviews for cooling systems like some kind of water/air cooling hybrid on toms hardware. and the reviewer say he scraped off the stock paste and applied some special brand(can't remember the brand) paste. so my question is does brand really matter? and what brand do you recommend?

thermal paste is a MUST, and as arc said AS5 is the asus of that product genre.

If you cant afford that, it can be had at most electronics or electrical stores. It usually comes in a small packet, Electricians sometimes wrongly refer to it as thermal adhesive.

Notice I said electronics or electrical stores not BS radio shack, radio shack here is a joke, and their prices ludicrous.

I have used Acrtic Silver 5 and Arctic Ceramique, and I personally prefer the Ceramique.

Technically using Ceramique -shouldn't- void the warranty on your boxed AMd processor as it isn't grease.

and I'll immediately mention that if you need to clean off either from you CPU or HSF, use acetone or my favorite, Articlean.

Video cards don't usually come with a whole lot of thermal paste pre applied. Some people clean off the gpu & hsf and apply regular AS5. I'm not sure about special paste for video cards since i've never heard about it before, but if it does exist, its not absolutely necessary.

there is one from Zalman, ZM-STG1 super thermal grease. from reviews this is very good as well. also, there is OCZ ultra thermal grease or somn so. i personally use AS5. i even used it on my GPU......dropped a few deg. too.

fuh real using AS5 in other-than-CPU applications! after fixing my crooked chipset heat-sink, i seated it with the AS5. i cannot tell if it made a difference cuz i spotted the flaw during first assembly, good thing! lol :ko:

Or, you can check Caveman Computing (not a plug) in Valpark.  They usually have em for $75 per syringe.

e.g if it's in a electronic store etc
