LG develops oil and water displayBlood and sandBy Nick Farrell: Wednesday 08 August 2007, 09:14BOFFINS AT LG Philips have filed a patent application for a new type of thin, flexible display which uses oil and water inside the pixels.According to New Scientist, the technology could be used to replace the more expensive to make OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes).The cunning plan is to illuminate pixels on a flexible display by using pixels made from tiny plastic cells filled with oil and water.Since oil and water are not known for their mixing abilities, sort of like a bar in an all-inclusive Bulgarian resort, the oil floats on the surface of the water. This covers the coloured surface underneath it. When electricity is applied across the cell, the oil moves aside and the pixel's colour changes.New Scientist says that the display is full colour and glossy like a magazine cover.
