impressive price points you guys achieved  there. Inspiration for my HTPC Steam Machine.

Arc, line me up with a bess price on the cooler master 120!

I'm going to want a decent GPU in mine though, can't get away with the integrated options to qualify as a decent Steam Machine after all.

Same thing we have been saying all along

but this is where I want to challenge the prevailing wisdom

Quote
Up front, there's no question that buying a gaming PC is more expensive than getting the latest console. Once you factor in the cost of comparable hardware, a decent controller, and a Windows license (sorry, SteamOS just isn't there yet), it's hard to come anywhere close to the Xbone's $500 price tag, let alone the PS4's $400 sticker. PCs deliver a lot more flexibility—and often a lot more power—but you pay for it.

Just how much gaming bang can you have for your $499 bucks in an HTPC?

Quote
To be honest, cost has never really been a deciding factor for me. My home-theater gaming rigs have largely been cobbled together from old review hardware, so they've always been cheap to build.

As the author mentioned further along...his HTPCs have often been constructed from "hand me downs". This has long been the case for me and I am certain for many of us on GATT.

Which brings us right back to the HTPC SteamBox project. Can you put together a frankenstein mini gaming PC for US$499

I believe you can....boom bang.

SSD in the MGR...

WEI score (which I didn't even know was removed) for the drive jumped from 5.8 to 8.05...

Comparison benchmarks...

HDD

SSD

This SSD has the latest 5.21 firmware.  I read many reviews of poor performance with 5.06 firmware, but fortunately, this is no longer the case.
It also seems like this Kingston is a bit faster than the Corsair Force 3 in my main rig too.

Boot time has fallen to a very respectable 21 seconds.  Arcmanov Approved. :icon_thumleft:

The evolution continues...

All this lovely hardware, and no 250D to put it in.  :(

Yeah, the MGR is migrating to new 'digs'...

Why?  Like I need a reason.
Actually...it blows the Cooler Master Elite 130 out of the water in just about every way possible.

Won't be getting it till next weekend though (bummer).

Well...it took a while, but I finally got it all in....

Everything fits...but only just.
It was said that Corsair designed this case for the H100i.  Now I know why.  It fits with millimetres to spare.
There is actually a LOT of space in front of the PSU for extra cables.  An all-in-one kit could probably fit there
with two fans in push-pull.

Compared to the Cooler Master Elite 130, this thing is quiiiiiiiiiet.
I literally have to put my ear close to the case to hear the SP120s and the AF140 front fan running...even at max rpm.

The MGR has evolved again.

Totally forgot about the kickass view from the top panel window...

Using Corsair Link...you can configure the pump's built-in LED to light up in a variety of colours, pulse, cycle, or even change colour according to CPU temp.

Didn't even know them Dominators had LEDs on em either.   :icon_thumleft:

Now that Arc de advisor point me here, I can't help but feel... emulous. Once i get my board and do a size up i'll know if to upgrade the case to the Corsair 250D.

Even though out of the box the AMD A10-7850K APU supports onboard GPU out of the box, can the Geforce GTX 550Ti fit in this case? Tch.. i'll have to do what you did and stick to my budget and get it up and running before I go Lee Majors on it. :D

If this case is the bomb, consider the CM 120 case up for sale. ;)

The Cooler Master cases can fit GPUs up to a Nvidia Titan in size, so they will more than accommodate a 550Ti.

... and yeah, the 250D puts them cases to shame with volume, and features.

Basically one of the game modes with the story elements 'happening' all around you.

I have to admit, its rather clever.

Small upgrades.....

New SSD in the AGR  :happy0203:

Samsung 840 Series 250 GB SSD

Yes...Western Digital Velociraptor drive caddies make for EXCELLENT SSD adapters...now you know.  :laughing7:

Compared to the Corsair Force III it replaced, it's a tad faster, but its bigger...

...and if you have a 'brand name' case...you're definitely going to want a set of these custom external filters...

They're basically filters ringed by a magnetic border that attaches very cleanly to the outside
of your case.  The filters themselves are made of a very fine mesh that traps dust WAYYY better
than the stock ones in the case can...and now I don't have to open the case again for dust maintenance.  HOO-RAH!
