It seems MSI has finally got their act together and released a mobo thats
actually superior to that Gigabyte that I've been eyeing since May...

MSI X58A-GD65

Slightly better layout than the Gigabyte, so I can still use one PCI/PCI-E slot even if I have
two GPUs installed.
No more unnecessary legacy connectors (IDE/floppy).
SATA3 6 Gb/s and USB 3.0 support.
TWO eSATA ports.
Clear CMOS button in port cluster.
SPDIF/optical output for my AX720 headset. :)
On-board Power and Rest buttons.
Heatsinks low enough not to block my Thermalright HSF.

Not to mention, a nice colour-scheme.  Whats not to like?

December can't get here fast enough.

...and I may let go of my current board for 'small money', and a lil birdie
told me that a certain Core i7 CPU might be going up for sale too.  :)
Could be a killer deal in the making.  Stay tuned.

What about 'other' features like Japanese Capacitors, 12 Phase power (or whatever they're up to now), 2oz copper and better cooling solutions for NB and Power Regulators? Gigabyte and Asus have all these plus those heat pipe cooling solutions for power and NB/SB.

This board is only 8-phase power (I think) and from the pic,
it looks like all Japanese solid-state capacitors.

OMG...this monitor rocks SO HARD it aint funny...

Yeah, I know there's some dust there that I need to clean.  Next week for that.

I tell you...1080p is the HEALING.  For the first time, I can appreciate how the PS3 was
meant to be viewed.  Lawd have mercy.  MGS4 never looked so good.  Uncharted too.

Setup was a cakewalk.  Just plug in all cables, power on, and boof-baf.  Showtime.

I don't have to tell you how that *ahem* 'other stuff' looks on it.  Every hair is discernible.  :laughing7:

Can't wait to hook up the 6870s to this bad-boy.  * rubs hands *

LOL...well I DID have a 720p monitor, an Acer, but it died on me suddenly
earlier this year.  I am only now able to afford a kickass 1080p monitor worthy
of my rig's status.

Needless to say...more game will play.  :happy0203:

Considering a RAID-0 setup...
« Reply #477 on: January 03, 2011, 12:49:07 AM »
So I recently acquired two 80GB Western Digital Velociraptor (WD800HLFS) hard-drives...

...and I am considering migrating my current OS installation to these drives in a RAID-0 setup.

I would really like to experiment with the real-world advantages with RAID-0.  Them SSDs still
a little to pricey for my taste.

My question is:  Is it possible to migrate an already installed OS from a single drive to a RAID-0 array?

If so, what's the quickest and easiest way to do this, with minimum headache?

* does more research *

Just create a windows system image and proceed as normal.

Basically, the OS will see the raid array as a single logical partition. The most you'll have to do is provide a driver for the raid controller when its time to restore so that the os could pick it up.

OK, I understand RAID-0, and its workings, but Windows 7 has a 'system reserved'
partition that is created when you install.  Will this partition successfully migrate to
the array when you restore?

Hmmm...

Just remembered, I'll have to make some extra space for the extra drive too. (Not really an issue)

Serious experimentation immc later. :)
