So I decided to OC my LAN-rig to 4 GHz just for the fun of it...and was pleasantly surprised how easy
it was using the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R, compared to the Asus P5Q-E I used before (which needed a
BIOS update and several HOURS of tweaking/rebooting).

The BIOS is laid out MUCH better than the Asus in my opinion, and actually shows default voltage values next
to what it is currently, and if you mess up, you only need reboot about 3 times to recover.

Here is my rock solid stable result after just about 2 hrs of tweaking...

Quite a nice result for a machine with 'only' one HD4870.  :)

Temperature of the hottest core was 80C under extreme load.  Well within safe limits for 24/7 operation.
As far as the P45 boards go, I'll have to actually recommend this one over the Asus P5Q series.

Man have not one, but TWO machines in the top 5. You just can't compete with THAT level of uberness.

Well, actually, if I was actively competing with this rig, it would be 6th (above two technically superior rigs I might add :happy0203:).

So my test rig is back online...

Not too shabby for an E8400 and a HD4850. :)
...and were it to be included in the rankings...it would end up smack dab in the middle there at 12th place.

So, gentlemen, you have some 'work' to do.

One BIOS update, one driver revision, and several hours of tweaking later...   :happy0203:

...and yes, it is MUCHO stable...

Some advice for potential owners of this motherboard: the FIRST thing you need to do before you even USE
this board is to remove the IOH/ICH heatsink and replace the horrible TIM with Arctic Silver 5.  At stock clocks
you will see a drop of about 30C at least.  This helps a LOT, especially when overclocking.

Apparently the IOH temp issue has been somewhat of a sore point for many users of MSI's X58 series of motherboards.
A cusory glance at this MSI user forum reveals just how widespread this problem is.  MSI needs to improve on its X58 northbridge cooling.
Some enterprising modders have even used a 40mm fan on top of the heatsink, and some have gone even further
to replace the heatsink entirely with the Thermalright IFX, but that may actually render some SATA ports unuseable.

I'll have to find some 1337 way of using my Antec Spot Cool fan for maximum effect.

Man cross the 25k barrier yes. I myself am looking for a solution for that IOH issue, preferable one where I dont have to spend any money.

Well, I did exactly as most modders suggested.  I actually removed that heatsink, cleaned off the already hardened TIM,
and put on some Arctic Silver 5 on dat biatch.  Idle temp on the IOH dropped a full 30C from 92C to 62C.

So you could try that.

Before I even installed the board, I did just that. I cleaned off that glue totally and put as5. Yet, to my surprise, temps were STILL crossing 100degrees so I was like wwaaaaaa??? Yes I verified that it was clipped properly to the board...no dice.

As promised, I just found a solution, so simple and elegant in its simplicity. I snapped off the fan off of an old amd heatsink and slotted it right over the nb heatsink. The fan was thin enough that it slid perfectly under the lever for the cpu hsf and the fan is now resting quite snugly on my master video card. Temps are now hovering at a much more comfortable 65 degrees.
