After a few days of tweaking, I finally got this CPU stable at 4 GHz...

3DMark Vantage

IntelBurn result (10 tests)

These Q9xxx CPUs are a lot harder to OC than the Q6xxx models. Maintaining stability requires
manipulation of FSB, North Bridge, South Bridge, PLL, and GTL Reference voltages. It took a lot of reasearch
and forum trolling to find that magical combo of voltages, but even then, I still had to raise or lower a voltage
setting here and there to get it just right.

IntelBurn is something else. It makes Orthos/Prime95 look tame in comparison. No more waiting for hours
to determine if your OC is stable. IntelBurn will tell you in MINUTES if something is wrong.

No grey area...its either pass or fail.

Max load temps shot up to 71C at one point, so proper CPU cooling is a must. IntelBurn does raise the max temps
a LOT more than Prime95 ever could, so I'm pretty sure that this OC is good for 24/7 operation. * Thanks Noctua *

Idle temp on this CPU at 4 GHz is a quite pleasant 35C. Quite a bit better than the Q9300, which idled at 43C.

Ah find Crixx takin too long, so I've decided to become the Core i7 guinea-pig, with the following:

MSI X58 Pro mobo

Intel Core i7 920 CPU

Corsair XMS3 3 x 2GB DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) RAM

Once again, cooling will be provided by Noctua

Should hopefully have all these b!a#ches by next weekend (once Customs stop misbehaving).

That board and CPU will be the base of my new system once I get my current parts sold. I'musing back my current core contact cooler with the new 1366 retention bracket for $10us. Those i7 coolers are just too expensive.

Well, Noctua does have a 1366 retention bracket for the same HSF I sold to Hard O/C, but
the bastards chose not to sell it on any US website, so I'm forced to purchase the Core i7 version,
which is essentially the same damn thing with the new 1366 bracket included. (aint THAT a b!#ch?)

It does come with two fans instead of one though, so thats a 'plus' I guess.

Well, I got the RAM and mobo this morning...and was miffed to discover that I was charged VAT on both.

The on-again, off-again VAT jumbie for PC parts is upon us once again.

Why not go 3 for 3 and charge VAT on the CPU while you're at it too Mr Customs....

On a positive note, I can't to see this rig come alive. more ownage by Arc
