Playstation Portable (Slim) - Unveling this E3 2007?
« on: June 08, 2007, 01:06:03 PM »

Today, thanks to several sources close to Sony, we bring you that nitty gritty as the redesigned Playstation Portable nears completion.

Keep in mind this isn't Playstation Portable 2, but rather a redesign of the original, so it will be sporting the same internal hardware. But that's about the only thing that hasn't changed. The new Playstation Portable will have a much slimmer design, thanks mostly to a new LED screen that will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up far less space. That LED also helps pump up the battery life of this sexy new model, which can last as much as four times longer than the original PSP. While the new PSP still makes use of the UMD drive, it will be a faster version and to help speed up loadtimes and gameplay, the portable will come packed with 8GBs of internal flash memory. Finally, the PSP's much maligned buttons have been revamped and the D-Pad has gotten a major overhaul, giving portable gamers something more like a Playstation 3 D-pad to play with.

The company is still trying to decide whether or not they want to include a built-in camera, as they weigh whether the cost of adding the device will be worth the benefit to gamers. Our money is on no camera because of the competitive price issues. Those of you holding out for a touchscreen are, unfortunately, going to have to wait, though word has it that it will most like make an appearance in Sony's next portable gaming device. While the new PSP will remain black, Sony is still trying to decide whether it will have a glossy or matte finish.

The final price for this new PSP hasn't been set, but Sony is hoping to sell it for under $170 or so. Manufacturing should commence in the upcoming weeks, and the product is going to be officially unveiled at this year's E3. The sale date being tossed around is August, but don't be surprised if it's pushed back to September. What's this reworked PSP called? It doesn't have a name as of yet, but may we suggest "PSP Slim"?

Sony Computer Entertainment of America declined to comment on "rumor or speculation."

i think that the only thing that is missing on the PSP to be perfect is to rumble...  :cowboy:
Cause as wel all know excessive and violent trembling is usually conducive to reading a spinning optical disc ;)

W1nTry, you do know the UMD disc is encased in Plastic right? it's not just a small disc that you load in..So a little rumble shouldn't hurt..LOL

I know what the UMD is, but even so the level of vibration that is given off from a rumble controller I think would be enough to cause the engineers headaches in implementing it with the PSP... not to mention the fact that the copied patent that Sony used with its counter balance would increase the weight of the PSP and size... considering they trying to slim it down... this option would add more headache. Next of course is the fact that as it rumbles the whole DAMN screen shakes... all in all,, not the best idea and I am sure the fact that its not implemented already says that much...

hmm

is this worth waiting for?

my nephew is comin to trinidad in 2 weeks, getting my bro to get me a psp core and a parkour dvd from american parkour, but does this news warrant a wait??

like the gba sp was leagues ahead of the normal gba and the slimmed ds is nicer than the normal ds

is this gonna be worth the wait?

^yea sounds amazing eh...

But something with 8gb memory for under $200USD sounds pretty fake to me...

Also considering the 8gb memory stick costs equally or even more than that..

So if there designed PSP is real, just have to wait til E3 for details...

But if these rumours do pull through..thats a hell of well spent money!

E3 this year in LA is the pantyman E3. Its called E for All. Its open to the entire public with anyone 13 years and over. You are allowed a certain number of hours gametime. They have strict rules on booth sizes meaning all the same size. No chicks in sexy gettup, no big...no...HUUUUUUGEE screens ( i talking taking up about 40 feet wrapping around the entire room in a circle screens). Its a noob/fanboy techfest for games. And.....god, its 13  years up. E3 is usually 18 years and over.

^No?

Isn't this year's E3...well E3?

And the E For All event is later down the year?

Recent rumblings have started to fuel the hot topic regarding the next version of Sony’s PSP. A few days ago, Kotaku exclusively reported some details on a ‘PSP Slim’, which can be seen here:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/psp-slim-details-revealed-267108.php

Now, it’s been a few days after the report, and we still don’t have enough to confirm anything as fact. So… for the past weekend, I’ve been hesistant to post the following story until now.

Several sources have come to my attention regarding Kotaku’s original article last week. And in fact, plenty of their details about this ‘PSP Slim’ contradict the information that Kotaku has led thousands of its readers to believe already. My undisclosed sources tell me that Kotaku’s report is mainly factually inaccurate.

With that being said, these rumblings are based on my trustworthy sources, all of which have links to the actual details themselves:

- New slimmer PSP is indeed in the works. Hardware is essentially the same, and will NOT have any big speed increases.

- There’s no longer a UMD Tray, but a slot loader instead. Design is supposed to have an even “cleaner” look, much like the DS Lite.

- The screen is the exact same size, and is sidekick-esque. This means that there’s some sort of a flip-factor, making the overall system even smaller.

- The screen is still LCD, not LED. Either way, battery-life will obviously be improved.

- Sony is considering bluetooth capabilities.

- Underneath the screen is the home button, the brightness controls and the volume button. This revision will also include all-new controls for chapter skipping with UMD movies and music tracks.

- Not 8GB of on-board memory. 4GB is more likely. However, the storage capacity could change.

- Sony is still deliberating on the issue, but the PlayStation Portable name should stay put. This could eventually replace existing PSP models.

- Pricing is currently the same, and a release date is more likely for Fall 07.

- Other news: Killzone is looking real hot, and could have some screenshots before E3 actually happens. The game will, for sure, make it to E3 in some form, which I would guess is playable.

So that’s what I know right now. I’ll have more updates leading up to E3. For now, the details above are as close and informative as we’re going to get regarding the new PSP until E3. That is, if Sony decides to show the hardware at E3… a longshot at that.

As I stated earlier, the info above is unconfirmed, but it’s as trustworthy as you’re going to get.

When and where will the Summit be held?
The Summit will be held July 11 – 13, 2007, at several hotels and Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

Let me make something VERY clear. E3 itself  is now a business meeting in a hotel downstairs for INDUSTRY ONLY. No games, just meetings. Fiscal profits/losses, ideas and plans for changes in games. You will be watching demo's and not playing anything. Interviews for press like woah. E for all is for all you nubs that want to "omgigoinE3toplaygames" ppl. You wont like it, 13 year old zerg fest with little children lining up to play games. You going to be waiting in lines for 4-6 hours to play titles like HALO 3, Heavenly Sword or whatever else is scheduled to show that is a "big" game. You even have a playtime card, meaning you are timed  for the games you play:P lame. Wait in line for the little kids "i cant wait for.....", "XYZ looks so good, i cant wait for it...." Was already bad in the Nintendo line at E3 last year. My answer:  WHY are you speaking to me?, you gonna DAMN well wait for it, like everyone else.

FYI for those that didnt know ive been to E3 for the past 2 years. E for All is not going to be anywhere NEAR the scale it used to be.

My advice. Head to Tokyo Gameshow from now on.
