Dell getting a clue on PC design???
« on: May 21, 2007, 09:11:49 AM »
Interesting read:
Quote
At Dell's launch of its "Hybrid Business" strategy today, the company spent a few minutes talking about its history of developing new standards, and forcing them on the industry. One of the standards discussed: Display Port. This new interconnect, according to Dell CTO Kevin Kettler, will redefine what an LCD monitor looks like.

It will support up to 4x the current HDTV resolutions, allow for integrated peripherals around the display, and will let you daisychain multiple monitors, rather than installing them in a star configuration. Everyting, including audio, microphone, panel I/O and more will all go through a single bi-directional cable.

Even better, by eliminating a lot of the electronics used for video conversion, new LCD monitors will be super-thin, and super sleek. The prototype, displayed above, should be available later this year. It's only about a half an inch thick. Display Port also promises to make notebook monitors thinner too, said Kettler.

And here's a PIC:

The 'glass' may not be glass at all.  It has the 'Dell' logo on it.  Probably a speaker mount.
Or, it could be a 'pressure-pad' for a touch-screen interface.  After all, they DID mention 'panel-I/O'.

Very nice concept here.  I'll take one please.  BRISK BRISK......

Everyone seems to have missed the technical points... they are/have developed a new interface (yeah... not HDMI or or... whatever) but still a unified connector that will allow HIGHER RESOLUTIONS or HD formats AND HD SOUND (hence the SPEAKERS around the display) whilst minizing the electronics required onboard the device hence it's 2"s thick... generates less heat and looks well... its looks pretty damn good. As for touch sensitive, you'll notice the white lines running from the speakers and even the buttons... so its more for touch sensative buttons or other peripherals I would think, wires are still required.

I was gonna post this separately, but since its along the same theme I figured why not... check this out (while its up that is): http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_720h2c?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

It's the newest XPS and whilst I am usually anti-Dell or not DIY its a step in the right direction for them somewhat... save that its kinda like shooting itself in the foot, owning Alienware and all but under pricing itself....geezus... canabalism is a heck of a thing.

Oh just to highlight what makes this system decent:
QX6700 OCed to 3.46GHz
4GB of Corsair Dominator
2x174GB Raptors
2+ TB of storage
Custom Water cooling from CootIT
PhsyX
24" Display

Very wicked.  A colleague of mine (where I work) purchased one for his children (he's a manager).
Paid approx $12,000 TT for it too.  Keep in mind that these children are about 9-13 yrs old eh.

*sigh*  Talk about wastage.  He coulda pay me a 1K to build a uber gaming PC with uber parts and still
save about 4K.

You get what you pay for I guess...

they not shooting themselves in the foot :) as ive stated before, like that blizzard making a star craft mmo to compete with  wow.
Its the most crafty brilliant maniacal marketing scheme eversss

its all win win, they create artificial competition between themselves and alienware, and no matter who the user chooses between the two, they win.

Keep up the charade of being seperate entities and competiting with the xps line versus  every alienware (there is no real competition as dell was smart enuff to remove alien wares line in the same price range as the xps), so yu want cheap, you go xps, you want hardcore, you go dellienware.

What crixx failed to mention is Dell is losing losing losing money... HP and IBM wtfpwning the server market atm, which is where the BIG $$$ are... ever since that exploding laptop snafu... poor dell though... I mean sure their customer service SUCK@$$, but it was really SONY to blame for the poor QA process in manufacturing the batteries to begin with...

if you want one, it's not bad. But that bezel is just too thick to comfortably use two in a dual monitor setup. I LIKE the current slim bezel black monitors they have now.
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?
