Saxman's Work of Art
« on: April 25, 2007, 10:10:30 AM »
Well some of you may know that I was forced to suddenly abandon my quest for "Intel Core 2 Goodness" (for the while) when I got a sweet deal on an Asus motherboard. My god! what a deal!

any how I have now decided to start on my uber PC project, theme name "PCs are a work of art". Bar that all C2D users will still pwn me without a flinch. I'll still put up a fight in the benchies.

After much assembly, this is my PC specs as current:

Motherboard: Asus M2N32 WS Professional
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (2.2GHz)
RAM: Titan 1GB DDR2-667 RAM (PC2-5300; timings 5-5-5-13)
Video Card: GeForce 6200LE (I had to beg to get this card when i was buying board)
Hard Drives: SATA 120GB, SATA 200GB, SATA II 500GB
Optical Drive: Pioneer DVD burner
Case: Thermaltake Armor Jr. with clear side panel.
PSU: Ultra Products XVS 600W Modular
Other: MSI Theater 550 Pro TV Card

Estimated cost: TT$7200.00

I shall now present pics of my budding uber rig:

more pics to be posted

I need to do some serious cable management soon, though

FUTURE UPGRADES:
Immediate: GeForce 8800 GTS (unless DAAMIT comes with something better for the price).
June: Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-6400 or higher. 2 x 1GB. Maybe I'll go with Corsair instead. Haven't decided for sure yet.
a front mount USB/Firewire/Audio/Flash reader bay... PC sits on table and I'm not going to be reaching on top to plug in anything.
July:  Athlon 64 X2 6000+. From reviews I've read it beating the FX-62 and will just barely match an C2D E6600
much later on (December): -  possibly spray inside of case black.

Very nice indeed.
Would have gotten this case if the Antec 900 was not available.

Trust me this is a boss case.

Antec is just as good.

In assembly I literally had to use the manual to ensure I installed everything correctly.
Once of my first acts was to convert the front of the case to the BTX style, the hard drive residing in a HDD cage. the 120mm Antec Tri-cool Fan is attached to this case and slid into place. a second 120mm fan is in the lower section pulling in extra cool air. I slipped the fan controller through the  front panel so I wont have to  open the case to adjust fan speed.

The hard drive have never run cooler since I got this case. temps as low as 32 in the middle of the night and not crossing 40C in the day in my uber hot, concrete-roof house. Oddly, the CPU temp has jumped to 45C and held there no mater what.

The case much roomier to work in as a result of the BTX scenario... cable can be routed more easily. I hate the top mounted USB/firewire. I may eventualy unscrew it altogether. Right now I'm searching for a decent 5.25" bay mount for said ports that connect to motherboard

Those long PCI-X (not to be confused with PCI Express) slots are more trouble that they are worth thus far. Can't get a PCI USB card to work in them, despite the slots being said to be backward compatible with PCI cards.

The power LED is so freaking bright it'll work as a night light for my living room!!

Still pondering on a design plan to hide or neaten all those cables!! man they look messy! Anyhow I go do that after I get the new video card.

thoughts: go for the 8800GTS one time or wait for DAAMIT to bring out their champion, considering is almost May? I've even considered a 7900GS for saving a few dollars for the while. US$300 I admit is a bit much for me to spend right now.
God is dead.

Oh yeah! Barely two days I have it running and already visible dust has collected at the front fans.

good thing the front has washable filters. Once every 2 - 4 weeks shouldn't be too much of a pain to clean.

yep... after 3 hours of painstaking disiassembly and reassembly, installing that HSF, planning cable management, even sleeving the front panel cables, it is finally done....

but is a damned good thing I bought the Thermaltake Armor Jr. case. The MC heat sink HUGE!!!! O_O
I looking good. This rig looking real good.

Pics going up between Wednesday and Thursday. Just waiting for my rechargeable AA batteries for camera to charge first (like they reach end of life already.. pfft!)

Well I assumed my previous post had this question covered already, but since you asked:

Yes, I got it Tuesday. Yes, It was installed last night. Yes. It fit.  Just bes sure to get a case as wide as the Armor Jr. You'll NEED it.

Also you have to remove motherboard to install that HSF

Let me give the first tease of the HSF:

...more to come later (in thumbnails, pfcourse)
