Old School Favourite Cartoon Thread
« on: February 08, 2007, 10:56:37 AM »
This thread is geared at showcasing the cartoon that helped you pass the time during childhood. Those of you still in your child hood feel free to post the oldest cartoon you remember.

Some rules: Please dont post stuff like Naruto and Bleach.
#1 They are anime and not cartoons
#2 They are in no way "Old School"
#3 I dont really want useless spam about superman will beat batman anyday...

Format: Show Name
Random show information (you can use http://www.wikipedia.org/ for this)
            Image
            Video link (if applicable)

I'll start the ball a rolling with an easy one, one we all used to watch whether u want to admit it or not:

Captain Planet

Created by Ted Turner in 1990, concept behind the show was to make viewers aware of environmental hazards. Was summoned by his five planeteers using their rings.

Definetely....

X-Men The Animated Series

X-Men is an American animated series which debuted on October 31, 1992 (the 1993–94 season) on the Fox Network as part of Fox’s “Fox Kids” Saturday morning lineup, which featured cartoons such as X-Men, Bobby’s World, and Life with Louie, and live-action programming such as VR Troopers, directed at young children.

X-Men is Marvel Comics' second attempt at an animated X-Men program, after the ill-received half-hour pilot “Pryde of the X-Men” was broadcast multiple times between 1991 and 1992.

The popularity and success of X-Men, along with Batman: The Animated Series (which also debuted in the 1993–94 season), helped launch a number of 1990s–2000s animated series based on comic book series.

(sorry that was the only image I could find!)

Here's my two cents.....this was one of my favorite cartoons of all time, I used to video record the episodes since I was f***in' eight years old.....Also it's way better than the filth known as "X-Men Evolution"

Darkwing Duck

This show was moved to Toon Disney in the late 1990s, but it was later taken off the air in 2004 due to the addition of JETIX. The show was revived on January 19, 2007, where it gained a place as a weekly two-hour block on Fridays.

Samurai Pizza Cats

Cyborg cats delivering pizza and fighting off evil ( Does it get any better than this)

Look its the themesong Well half anyway
Lyrics:
Will somebody please cue that bird?!
*Squak Squak Squak*
Samurai Pizza Cats.
(Oh yeah!)
Who do you call when you want some pepperoni?
Samurai Pizza Cats.
(Right on.)
They're stamping out crime and you know that ain't bologna.

There’s Speedy Cerviche, he’s the leader of the bunch.
(That’s right!)
A heck of a fighter, makes a heck of a lunch.
And little Polly Esther, who’s never afraid
(That’s me.)
Of going into battle when the bad guys invade.
Here’s Guido anchovy, a wild romantic rover.
This cat gets down down with a love hangover.

Best cartoon ever - Animaniacs

This show focused on the adventures, or more accurately, the misadventures, of the Warner Brothers (Yakko and Wakko Warner) and the Warner Sister (Dot Warner), who claim to be the stars of some of the early Warner Bros. animated cartoons, which were so insane that the studio execs locked the films away in vaults; the characters were locked in the water tower at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. The primary cartoon (there are several other character adventures in the series) focuses on the trio "escaping" from the water tower, and running rampant on the WB lot. This is described in the show's theme song, sung by the characters. The description of the Warners is a tongue-in-cheek homage to Bosko, Warner Bros.' first cartoon character.

Very close second - Batman: The Animated Series

Batman: The Animated Series is an American animated television series adaptation of the comic book series featuring the DC Comics superhero, Batman. It is widely regarded by fans as the most iconic modern representation of the Batman character and mythology, and also as the most faithful animated series based on a comic book. The dynamic visual style of the series is based on the artwork of producer Bruce Timm. The original series was partially inspired by Tim Burton's 1989 blockbuster Batman film, and initially took as its theme a variation of music written by Danny Elfman for the film.

Honorable mention - Gargoyles

The series features a clan of warrior creatures known as Gargoyles that turn to stone during the day. Led by their leader Goliath in the year 994 A.D., they protect Castle Wyvern and its resident humans on the coast of Scotland until betrayal causes a massacre of the clan and a magic spell forces the six survivors into stone sleep, until the castle rises over the clouds. In 1994, a billionaire named David Xanatos purchases the castle and moves it to the top of his New York City skyscraper, breaking the spell. Awakening in modern day Manhattan, the gargoyles must adapt to this new world as they vow to protect the citizens of New York.

Captain Bucky O'Hare (CCN TV6)

The storyline follows a parallel universe (the aniverse), where a war is ongoing between the slightly inept United Animals Federation (run by mammals) and the sinister Toad Empire. The Toad Empire is led by a vast computer system known as KOMPLEX, which has brainwashed the toad population. - wiki

This one was boss and the song was the first thing i remember from it.
I remember an episode where the little robot with one eye had to pull a serious spy mission and he broke up into pieces so the toads wouldn't know what going on and then reassembled on location - was cool

AND I AM ASHAMED OF YOU GUYS!
This IS a gaming forum where the game related cartoons?

Captain N : The game master (this only show a short while in TTT at a time)

The hero of the series, Kevin Keene, a teenager from Northridge, California, and his dog, Duke, are summoned to another universe known as Videoland by being sucked into a vortex that formed in in his television, called the Ultimate Warp Zone. In order to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Kevin is to become the hero "Captain N: The Game Master" and save Videoland from the evil forces, led by Mother Brain (the chief enemy in Metroid), who has almost succeeded in capturing the Palace of Power and conquering all Videoland. Kevin, armed with a Zapper and a belt buckled shaped like an NES controller, and Duke appear suddenly on the other side of the Ultimate Warp Zone before the N Team, which consists of Princess Lana (the ruler of Videoland), Simon Belmont (the hero from Castlevania), Mega Man, Kid Icarus (from Kid Icarus, known in the actual games as "Pit"), none of which show any confidence in Kevin's ability in the beginning. After Lana is kidnapped by the enemy shortly after Kevin's arrival, the reluctant group puts their differences aside to go on a rescue mission where Kevin eventually gains the other's confidence. - wiki

remember in tight situations he used to "pause' :D

Super Mario Bros. Super Show (AVM CH 4)

I remember most the live action with a very jeri curled mario and a very malnourished luigi, they used to talk crap then the actual cartoon used to come on, the episode i remember most was when mario had saved the kingdom after bowzer then destroy some sacred balls, fireballs that is :D and mario used the fire flower and beat them then shoot 3 back into the jar that housed the kindoms original balls, fireballs that is :D

last one...

Captain Zed (CCN TV6)

Captain Zed and PJ patrol the dream time skies in Dreamship 12A, fearlessly
foiling the many attempts of The Nightmares to invade children's dreams.
Zed is just one of many such patrols operating out of Dream Base, wherein
The Commander and Larry and their various aides scan the Dream Monitors
for signs of sabotage and subterfuge. Zak Zed's job would be a whole lot easier
without the unwelcome rivalry of a fellow agent, Captain Flannel. But Flannel's
so inept he usually foils his own conniving plans for himself. And that means Zed
can get on with the job, keeping Nightmares like Snort and Mutter at bay and kids
dreams safe and sound for another night...

was never so sure if PJ was a girl or boy...

Pinky and the Brain
Pinky and the Brain are cartoon characters from the American animated television series Animaniacs. Later, they starred in their own spin-off animated television series called Steven Spielberg Presents Pinky and the Brain, and even later in Pinky, Elmyra and The Brain. These latter series were produced by Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros. Animation, and aired from 1995 to 1998 on The WB Television Network, running for 65 episodes.

The two are genetically enhanced lab mice who reside in a cage in the Acme Labs research facility. Each week sees Brain come up with a new plan for the two (led by him) to take over the world, which ultimately ends in failure. In common with many other Animaniacs shorts, many episodes are in some way a parody of something else—usually a film. The cartoon's famous tagline is: "Come Pinky, we must prepare for tomorrow night" "Gee, Brain, what are we doing tomorrow night?" "The same thing we do every night, Pinky — Try to take over the world!"

does Thundercats count as old school? if thats the case, THUNDERCATS, HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some small info on the series:(from wikipedia)

   January 23, 1985 – 1990
Set against a backdrop juxtaposing science-fiction and fantasy elements, the ThunderCats series tells a good-versus-evil tale of mythic proportions, featuring an equal mix of high-technology and magic, hand-to-hand combat, and a central core of championed values. Its anthropomorphic heroes, the ThunderCats, are pitted against a rag-tag assortment of villains and a demonic wizard named Mumm-Ra on a planet known as Third Earth.

Hmm allyuh forget these yes

Defenders of the Earth is an animated television series of the 1980s featuring three characters from comic strips distributed by King Features Syndicate — Flash Gordon, The Phantom, and Mandrake the Magician — battling the Flash Gordon villain Ming the Merciless in the year 2015. Supporting characters include their children Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker (daughter of The Phantom), Kshin (adopted son of Mandrake), Mandrake's assistant Lothar, and Lothar's son L.J. The show lasted for 62 episodes; there was also a short-lived comic book series published by Star Comics (an imprint of Marvel Comics).

and what about this retarded show that bob always sings about..

as alyuh on the topic, I have been searching forever for an old cartoon about dragons.

Things I can remember is that the main character was a boy/young man that got transformed into a dragon.

He could not breathe fire at first

The dragons ate diamonds to enable them to breathe fire (go figure)

There was an elderly dragon that was his friend/mentor that later got killed in a battle with an evil dragon.

Anyone know this show? I've searched for years and have never been able to find it.

The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (also known as Jonny Quest: The Real Adventures) is an animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons from 1996 to 1997, and aired on all three major Turner Broadcasting entertainment networks (Cartoon Network, TBS Superstation, and TNT). The program is a spin-off of Hanna-Barbera's classic series Jonny Quest, and features slightly older versions of the same characters and a similar format.
Eleven-year old boy hero Jonny Quest is now an adventurous fourteen year old, and more determined to be more active in the adventures his father, noted phenomenologist Dr. Benton Quest, and the family bodyguard, Roger "Race" Bannon, often find themselves involved in. Joining them are Jonny's adopted brother Hadji and Race’s daughter Jessie. As in the original series, the Quest team travels across the globe, encountering strange and unusual adventures, villains, and creatures. The series had a much darker tone then the original series, with some non-recurring characters suffering gruesome off-camera deaths (with the deaths acknowledged by reaction shots of the leads). For example, in the climax of one episode, one villain is killed by being impaled on the rib cage of an elephant's skeletal remains, and another has his head crushed under an elephant's foot
.

Flip’s critique: At the time of it’s release....the animation was flawless with riveting artwork. Not to mention amazing voice overs and innovative storylines.
Personally I found it darker than the Batman series and much more visceral. A huge piece of innovation (and props) went to Questworld. The whole concept and idea behind it was mind blowing, as well as the battles that occur within….Oh I forgot to mention that the opening title/music sequence rocks!
5 stars out of 5
