Soooo im looking to buy a new machine within a month or 2
« on: February 04, 2007, 08:34:24 PM »
As the topic states I expect to be buying a pc in a month or 2.

My requirements,

ample HD space
Speed/performance for a gamer/graphics/light video work
and I expect to be purchasing vista for this upgrade.

I have no bias towards any particular brands or anything built or custom either

I currently have
6600xt
160 gigs and 120 gigs hardrives
amd athlon (64) 3000+ processor
1.5 gigs of ddram (generic)
some random motherboard cant remember now that supports pci

I kinda wanna go beyond this now (gonna buy new peripherals etc etc)

I expect that I would spend like near $10 -11,000.

Any suggestions?

well i think prowl's p5w mobo plus an e6600 plus  2 gigs of kingston and an 7900gtx or 8800 gt may be really suited for your needs

More importantly what is the price range we talking bout? that ultimately determines what you build imho.

My Pick:

Asus P5N-E SLI Motherbaord (Nforce 650i Chipset)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB, PC2-800)  - (Any other reputable brand may be substituted)
GeFroce 7950GX2 or GeForce 8600 when released
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 series SATA-II HDD 250GB minimum
Pioneer DVD Burner (what all de DVD pirates using!)

Hurt to wallet: estimated US$1410 before shipping

This is more or less what I am targeting, at least on the Intel side.
God is dead.

Well that is supposed to be a beast mobo... i'll do some digging sometime to see if there is a better out there or in the least which mobo manu may have the best implementation of that chipset. That aside I would suggest waiting for the 340MB version of the 8800GTS. It's due out anytime now and should stack up will against its older sibling with double the memory. That aside I guess noone bothers with better sound? Audigy 4? Xi-Fi??? and what about raptors instead of standard SATA 3.0 drives? or in the least a 3 drive RAID0 array? Just throwing out some ideas... Oh and after market HSF for better cooling and OCing?

Tom's Hardware had a US$10,000 PC at one point eh:

I'd have mentioned such, W1n, but he didn't specify, and I didn't want to go over-budget.

But still good things to have in an uber-system.

audigy reach 4 now?? good god!! what happend to 3?? lawlll last sound card i ever even batted an eye lash at was the audigy 2 platinum thingy cause it reduced strain on cpu during games by as much as 15%
so iam guessing the 4 will do more of the same in that area

hmm @ the raptors idea, thas real money for little storage

i think prowl's setup has alot of storage and a raid instead of raptors.

Raptors in raid 0 for speed vs a pair of 320 or 250 drives in raid 1 for safety? your choice.

My Idea of a storage system:

2 80GB or larger hard drives in RAID 0 for performance (Raptor, ideally, but the price!)
a separate 3rd hard drive (200GB Minimum) dedicated to My Documents folder
a 4th drive, up to 500GB (I personally going for e-sata) for backups

hmm, i personally think using drives as large as 500 gigs is setting yur self up for disaster
2 120 gig raptors
and every other drive at 250 to 320 gigs is fine.

if that 500 gig drive fails...

as opposed to your data being spread across the smaller drives

Here's the beast right here
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136054

And as for the data drive...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144016

Of course we're talking a pair of each.

2 x 36.7GB Raptor in RAID 0 ( US$105 x 2 = 210 )

2 x 500GB in RAID 1 ( US$140 x 2 = 280 )

TOTAL: < US$500

There Crixx, I solved your problem about one 500GB going bad

the x2800 /R600 series from ATI is coming out  in march/april.  I expect by then the 8800GTS price will drop alot , along with the lower priced models bieng released , so you will be able to get a DX10 card by then.

voyd, i likin that raid 0 raptor setup.. tho i not of WD ..
if that 500 gig drive fails...

you know, that raises an interesting question; home backup media has not really moved apace with hard drive space... for a while, yuh could rock some cds, then some dvds.. but  until bluray or hddvd decide to calm down, or you wanna invest in a tape drive ( eh,voyd? lol)    you either doh back up, or back up to a whole heap a dvds

i still doh feel safe when backed up on the network, or over other drives..

that aside, i feelin voyd suggestion with the 2 x36 raptors (though i despise wd with every fiber in my body) in raid 0 and the 500s in raid 1
