I would say the best games ever conceived would be (listed out by series and the games that truly defined them:

1) Tetris (original and 3 for the SNES)
2) Mortal Kombat (2, Deadly Alliance and Deception)
3) Super Mario Bros. (1 and 3)
4) Marvel vs. Capcom
5) Final Fantasy (7 and X)
6) Mega Man X (1, 8, Maverick Hunter X and Command Mission)
7) The Legend of Zelda (virtually all except for what appears on the Phillips CD-i system)
8) Street Fighter 2 Turbo
9) Tekken (3 and 5)

Although those 2 MK games were good, i preffer DA, i hadda say Deadly Alliance and Deception didnt even land a f@rt of attention on the vg industry with inovation. I understand you like the game NEO...but those two dont even deserve to be written up there with the rest of your list. Tekken 5 as well. Tekken 3 i give props for though. They may be great, GREAT games, but they are by far the "best games ever concieved". But yuh makin me want to go check out the new Mega Man games now LOL.

The only Mega Man is Mega Man 2 and Mega man X.....mayyyyybee X, it didnt land much on the indsutry either. Mega Man 2 for introducing Rush and being able to have an accessory like that in a side scroller to solve puzzles in the game.

Everyone forgetting Devil May Cry......AGAIN. People dont know that this is the FIRST game to go mainstream that actually FEATURED upgraded weapons in an action game. Ninja Gaiden for XBOX, God of War, and nearly ANY other game you can think about with this feature started with DMC for PS2.

Its really how far you started back with gaming. Final Fantasy 7 is a pretty up version of finaly fantasy 6, and FF2 had the most engaging story. X had a decent story, but what trully pull me was the graphics and depth of the world in this game. If there is a FF game to start someone on who has never played FF, X is that game.

Street Fighter 2, Legend of Zelda 1 and Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time too, Super Mario 64, Mario 1 and 3. Mario 64 TRULY put platformers in 3D and it WORKED, no Crash bandicoot rubbish.

I will tell you this now and always.....Shadow of the (mc) Colossus and ICO. Although Sands of Time was the bigger selling game, ICO does get its props for innovation.

Nobody calling Guitar Hero yet, that odd, or the DDR games either. Both of which have spawned a whole cult of gamers. Well this is console a console gaming forum so no PC. Daz for a next day men go talk all day with that.

Ninja Gaiden for the NES......wat happen to alyuh!!!. the first game to have cinematic video in it. When last you play Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2?

friggin CONTRA series. It was plain and simple....kill everything. But at that time when it came out, the game was engaging, it was versatile, it kept the gamer playing over and over and over. Contra for NES from side to back view. Contra Alien Wars, with wall climbing and shooting that actually MADE you break a sweat when that mc come crawling up the wall

Metroid series. Super Metroid, trully a GROUNDBREAKING game. a game for consoles that finally put in a boss that takes up THREE SCREENS dread. Metroid Prime again, the sense of lonliness, claustrophobia in some instances, a REAL sense of alienation in that game.

Double Dragon 2 (although 4 was great it wasnt groundbreaking) but 2 featured combo moves. You can switchup in mid attack, change your grapple attacks, actually featured a FANTASTIC scheme for brining all those moves to 2 buttons. Hyper Knee iymc. Diverse storyline, really diverse gameplay....boy that game change up. Level of difficulty well nice too.

mc COMBAT for Atari. well yuh know where i commin from with that. A little game called ADVENTURE....i believe it was the first adventure game i ever play that actually feature graphics...not text based. a lil square is a man, an arrow is a sword, some wierd @ss thing is a dragon. You kill the dragon with the sword, go to the other castle get a key, get in, kill and take the trophy or whatever, go back to your castle (oh and build a bridge or somethingon the way)

but honestly folks, inovation lies solely in the hands of the Japanese these days. US companies are doing great things, so is the french Ubisoft. But i mean TRULY groundbreaking means you defy the odds and take a HUGE risk that could lead to your downfall or success. Only companies like Nintendo make that leap, and they are used to it, AND....it works :)

Ok, nobody mention the Need for Speed series so I have to give them a nod. My favorites were the Hot Pursuit ones: 3 and 6. The series started out with a narrow focus on pure sports cars and exotics. That was my favorite feature by far. The first two had some sweet FMV of the cars. The intros for all the games in the series have been amazing, to say the least. But, it is when they introduced cops in the game that all hell broke loose. On the PC, you could design and download other cars to add to the replay value. Websites had tons of cars that would-be designers came up with. The best was adding in some custom cop cars to give yourself a nice challenge. The Underground slant was ok ... I am now playing the first Underground. I guess Most Wanted will be closer to what I normally think of in the NFS series: just flat out enjoyable racing in cars you have no chance in hell driving.

Just a few corrections here, shiv.

1) Deadly Alliance was remarked by many as the game that brought back the MK series, Deception winning the award for 'Best Fighting Game' by the Spike TV Video Game Awards. To say that these two games didn't make a mark for innovation for the series is like saying Super Mario Bros. sucked on the NES, because there are many who thought MK4 was the serious low point for the series, and DA re-worked it from the ground up with a new graphics engine, new style of gameplay, completely new character designs and storylines, and let's not start with the killing of Liu Kang, which helped drum up serious controversy for DA. That's not one, but SEVERAL points for innovation right there.

2) Mega Man 2 did not introduce Rush. Mega Man 3 did. And Mega Man X made a name for itself in the industry as well, with a lot of anticipation for X2 following as well. It not only spawned a hell of a lot of games, but two spin-offs from the X series, Zero and ZX, were made years after.

3) I would've said the first Devil May Cry, really I did, but it just didn't cross my mind at the time. Guess I just forgot about it.

4) I said 7 because of all the hype surrounding that game. While I'm a fan of X more than 7, to say that it hadn't a severe profound impact on the gaming world would be an all out lie.

5) Hm. Maybe I will take back Tekken 5, seeing as how it suffers from the 'Naruto syndrome'. Tekken 3 was really what innovated the series. Tekken 5's just purty with severely annoying fans (JAVA fella with the jeri-curl, I'm looking at you, you pompous JERK.)

Agreed.

Mega Man 2 didnt have RUSH, it had those Item number 1, 2 and 3 things. My mistake.....some of the most kick@ss ingame music though :)

True about FF7. It had alot of hype...ALLOT of hype. Great gameplay...but the story for me was......meh.
