Oracle to support Red Hat
« on: July 10, 2006, 11:43:25 AM »
I was trying to find that article where we discussed how Open Sauce isn't doing so well because of the support behind it... but I couldn't. This is relevant to that, and the overall effects could be interesting to the Red Hat community, have a read:

Red Hat pants at customer support: Ellison

You can't do it, so we will have to do it for you

By Nick Farrell: Monday 10 July 2006, 07:15

ORACLE boss Larry Ellison says that Red Hat was too small to give good customer support services and so his outfit was going to do it for them.
He claimed that every time Red Hat fixes a bug punters had to upgrade the operating system. He said that Red Hat don’t support old versions but just bug fixes.

According to ITP, Oracle is planning to step in and offer support services for Red Hat customers. However that would end up crippling the Linux outfit. Red Hat depends on its support services to make money after more or less giving away the software system.

Ellison has indicated that he is interested in getting hold of Red Hat's intellectual property, particularly as it has started competing against Oracle in providing middleware products.

think I remember it.

We were citing support issues as a main deterrant for adopting open source apps.

Seems Oracle agrees even at the pinnacle of the industry.

That will send the last few remaining nails into that arguments coffin.

Having support staff on the payroll is a must for corporate and enterprise adoption.

They could get away without if for GAIM and Filezilla but not with server OS and other mission critical apps.

well, even though he's one of the richest people in the world , a shrewd businessman and a veritable genius, i won't take his word for gospel in this situation

this might just be a case of the fox calling the grapes sour;

Red Hat outmanuevered Oracle in a bid to obtain Jboss earlier on this year ( Oracle wanted JBoss to compete against IBM's middleware solutions)
so his plan could be to spread FUD, depress stock prices and snap up Red Hat  (and JBoss) for next to nothing :-)

farfetched, maybe.. but this dude used to  race yachts for kix.lol

that aside, i'll take what actual customers say, not a potential rival company ..

did larry ellison provide examples of why he believes red hat can't handle its customer service?  with reference to the bug fixes that cause restarts?

i think the thread was one about who lookin out for vista ( with regards to why you don't think open source software is a valid solution because of preceived support issues)
