Modem disconnecting...?
« on: June 01, 2006, 11:31:51 PM »
Well this one has me kinda stumped....

For the past couple of weeks, whenever a game is being run, such that it is in fullscreen mode, my dial-up connection tends to time out after a couple of minutes on average. The connection would remain on without any problems whatsoever for hours to days at a time, but once a game is run in fullscreen mode, it disconnects.

I was wondering if it was some sort of software glitch, but I formatted my system partition and reinstalled everything from scratch, and the modem is still giving the exact same problem.

Any ideas as to why this is happening, and what can be done to fix it, barring the purchase of an entire new modem? It's an Intel modem btw.

Many of those internal modems are what we call "software" modems, where software is used in place of some componenet that i cant remember the name of right now. It is quite possible that the game is putting so much stress on the CPU that theres simply no cycles available to keep that software for the modem running, hence the reason why its timing out.

Your only option here is to get an external modem, which are all hardware, or an internal hardare modem. When looking for the latter, take great care in choosing one by making sure they clearly state on the box that it is a hardware modem. If there is no mention of that, its more than likely a software modem.

Well I get that whole issue about the modem being a software variant, but the odd thing is that the games never used to give problems with the modem, until a couple of weeks ago.

And you can't tell me that Warcraft III would be consuming all the CPU cycles of a Sempron 3000+ w/ 512MB RAM and a 256MB video card....

I think I'll plug in my old USR modem into it and see what happens....

It's probably TSTT fuXXoring up.

I have significant timeout issues on a basic dialup account and I'm using an external serial hardware modem.

I've been having timeout issues since last year.  Methinks the problem is on the server end.

Well in this case, it seemed to be the modem, because I swapped out the modem for my old one, and it's working perfectly so far...

So now I have to go and buy a new one when I ready...but I broke cuz of the fact that I had to order a set of stuff from online... :(
