The M2 cometh

BEHOLD SOCKET M2.... well actually the german website called it socket F... and its.. well maybe this is different... it's an Opteron socket and it's using the reverse logic (physical here not literal ppl) the CPU has no pins... the mobo does... I guess you really can't do it with 1207 pins... well anyways take a look

..... i REALLLLLL doh know why yu amd noobs are acting like this is ooo soo new and ooos and ahhsss

O.o  intels been doing this for wat a year or 2 now??

The reason is to make the chips less fragile so costs will go down and i guess the technical reasons for it would exist along the lines of  better cohesion between the chip and the socket

bloody ass amd n000bbwwwssss

lol

but in turn you make the motherboard more fragile?

I dunno, I guess it is the cheaper of the two components in most cases.

Better to have the motherboard get mucked up than the chip.

That said, can't say that I destroyed a cpu in the last 5 years due to the pins getting messed up.

Just doesn't happen with me. Not saying that it doesn't happen at all.

well there would be the odd cases where it might happen

but it makes it easier for them to be shipped

they would save some on packaging.

my understanding is that its mostly for shipping purposes that they did it.

Actually we amdites do know of the 775 PrescHott LGA pinless config crixx. We're not oohing and ahhing actually... I am kinda apprehensive about that setup and so were MOST mobo manufaturers... but if its the wind of change so be it. Now u gotta worry about the pins on the mobo being bent (which does happen btw). I also remember some of the reasons Intel switched to it, and alot of them relate back to the physical space available on a chip. NOT shipping. Basically the pin density is too high for it to be on the chip itself anymore so they put it on the mobo (which was the space). Its 1207 pins... thats too many, the pins would be very fragile and that makes no sense as it'd bend really easy. On the other hand there is the retention mechanism which holds the pinless CPU on and protects it somewhat. Take ur pick, either way it brings DDR2 support to AMDs A64 line and heralds more CUT@RSE for intel.  at least until Meron.

What oos and aahs?

I'm just hoping that this doesn't raise prices on entry level amd motherboards.

A mobo like the asrock sata II costing under $70us while providing excellent performance, features overclocking and stability, plus DC support would hopefully continue being common. Though I doubt it with a more expensive socket.
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

Ok... well here is AM2 or M2 for A64 platforms... whats really interesting is that AMD is using Dual Channel DDR2 on its Sempron, Athlon and Opteron lines... its a unified platform now and well might make the sempron a decent chip to go for... here's an article and a pic:

AMD's Socket M pixellated

Coming near you in Q2 2006

By Fuad Abazovic: Thursday 26 January 2006, 21:59
WE WON'T tell you too much about AMD's new socket but you have to know that it will accommodate future socket M CPUs. It is scheduled for a Q2 2006 launch. These CPUs will support dual Channel DDR 2 memory.

The high end dual core is codenamed Windsor, the single core socket M CPU is codenamed Orleans while the Sempr0n replacement is codenamed Manila. All of these CPUs support dual channel DDR 2 memory and of course socket M. A Sempr0n with dual channel DDR 2 sounds like a juicy platform.

Enough of this, here is a picture.

Why AMD renamed the Socket M2 to AM2

Copyright, right

By Fuad Abazovic: Tuesday 21 February 2006, 11:29

[Blocked Ads]THE LATEST document seen by the INQUIRER indicates why AMD changed its socket name from socket M to socket AM2. Since we know that AMD didn’t want to confuse us all, we knew that there was a reason behind.
We managed to get confirmation that AMD actually had some copyright problems and that it could not use socket M. The alternative was to add an additional letter A and everybody was cool with that.

As a big company you don’t want to mess with copyrights and since we are still talking about unannounced products, AMD didn’t have any problems renaming it. We will all get used to it as much as we found it pretty easy to call the Hammer CPU Opteron. It can not get worse than that, I guess.

It will launch of 06/06/06 so beware of the new socket, new integrated memory controller, new CPUs and the new Liver.
