The recent strings of reports discussing addictive massively multiplayer online video games in association with crimes such as murder have pushed China into action. Starting late this year, player's characters will begin losing abilities after three hours of consecutive play, reports GameSpot by way of Interfax.
The penalties become increasingly worse as time marches on. Players are expected to stop playing for a total of five hours after they hit the three hour mark, but if they continue, their character's abilities will be slashed in half, eventually being reduced to the lowest level past five hours.
"This timing mechanism can prevent young people from becoming addicted to online games," said Xiaowei Kou, deputy director of the general administration of press and publication (GAPP), during a recent press conference. When releasing an online game in China, publishers are required to go through GAPP. Basically, this law is sticking.
These restrictions aren't being incorporated into upcoming online games or some unpopular smaller ones.
