R520 to destroy Nvidia for Men like crixx

The guys online name is Gibbo, hes a reliable and trust worthy guy who comments in the GPU section all the time and is the head honcho for GPU information and stuff.

Heres what he had to say.

"ATI R520 is due in October and is looking like it will ship with 32 active Pipelines. It will have a very high price tag and will be extremely hard come by as ATI have had to move onto a new process and yield rates are very very poor so expect long delays on this product and it will no doubt be an extreme flagship product. However it will kick the G70's ass but will cost a lot more and will be hard to get hold off.

ATI Crossfire technology is their version of SLi which works by an external cable linking to cards together and at the moment the technology/drivers are nowhere near as stable as NV's SLi so ATI still have a lot of work to do.

nVidia on the other hand have G70 already in production. The GTX model will be shipping with 24 pipelines and we should have the product in ample stock from the best partners such as BFG, Leadtek and XFX in 2-3 weeks."

Its a marketing ploy. Nvidia will release the 24 bit pipeline  few months before ATI dominate the market before the R520 comes out.

I agree with Baego, this is bad how? granted we've seen that he who pwnz the market pwnz everyone from time to time, like when 3dfx went under cause Nvidia surpassed them. The way I see it, in light of bad availability of cards and such, the war of bragging rights is not as important as it used to be for increasing market share. Producing a full (esp lower and middle tier) product is the key. Sure if u have the most powerful card u get praise and ppl ask u to bless their babies. But its the low end and middle class video cards that make up ur bread and butter. So sure, ATI will prolly win out the benchies with this card, HOWEVER without proper availabilty PLUS its undoubted UBSURD price it won't mean squat. If Nvidia brings to the market the G70 before ATI can get its beast out the door, NOT only will Nvidia take the lead (for the moment) but it will be able to push the idea that they are competitive  in performance, better in price and have better unit numbers. I say time will tell, however if what u've wrote in this thread is true, then I will bet on Nvidia cause I know the WORLD + DOG cannot afford the best of the best and are more than willing to settle for second best if the price is good.

ATI has other cards out and will be releasing some otehr cards on the r420 chip as well as lowered prices on current ones to combat this ploy so in the end ATI will still be competitive.

DESPITE ALL that has been glittering like gold or pyrites before, it transpires that ATI flagship R520 cunningly nicknamed "Fudo" will feature only sixteen pipelines. The sources close to the company earlier indicated that the R520 might have even more pipes but this won't be the case. The R580 will end up with more pipes but R520 has its higher clock to fight Nvidia's counterpart.

Some of the chips will work at 700MHz or even 800MHz but yields at those speeds won't be satisfactory. Nevertheless, there is a good indication that overclockers will like this tech as will get them to run at sky high speeds.

The cards are floating around and ATI could paper launch them even now but would not be able to ship it until the first days of October. That is the rough launch date for this product launch and availability. I don’t think that you will be able to buy R520 master cards at this time but those will follow in a few weeks time after the normal ones.

The performance will be very close to existing 7800 GTX but we don’t know weather will R520 end up faster or slower than this Nvidia flagship card. However it turns out it will be close, very close.

Funny thing is that a few quarters back Nvidia was so scared of the R520 that it postponed its NV50 project and brought G70, more pipelines version of tweaked NV40 marchitecture and harvested the market with it.

Nvidia is still the only company shipping its current generation high end part while ATI will launch its answer one quarter later. ATI missed the back to school period and it might be tight to get into the Thanksgiving Day shopping hype but will sure be on this for the Yule.

Q4 is always the most profitable quarter for the industry as there is something with colder weather and computer shopping. This can be applied to Europe and USA while it's warm in Australia at this time but those guys still like to buy parts then. I do hope you have been enjoying my stint of weather forecasting, and I predict that things will precipitate from the skies when the barometer and the Moon are in Uranus.

 there is still a shred of hope , if the ATI architecture is highly efficient and they DO manage to clock them @ 700mhz stock they will still be able to compete , 700 x 16 = 11200 megapixels per second vs 450 x 24 =10800  ,  700mhz isn't too far fetched on a 90nm process if the  chip is efficient enough...
 150 nm = 420mhz stock speed (9800xt) , 130 nm = 500mhz stock speed (9600xt) , we know many 6600gts can reach 600mhz on 110nm with air cooling , so 700mhz air cooled 90nm wouldn't be too big a jump ... but i  doubt it will be highly overclockable on top of that .

Which sort of explains all the delays etc...cos the yields on a 700/800MHz part must really be like crap :S Ouch.

Whilst I understand what trini is saying, take into account the 7800 line is also a 110nm part so when u reduce that to 90nm and crank it to say even 600MHz or the yields willing 700MHz, what will their 16 pipeline card do against a 24 pipeline 700MHz behemoth? oh and with the nforce 5 when its launched with its 16x2 PCIe.
