Is Intel making a come back?
« on: July 27, 2005, 08:59:56 AM »
I am sure Crixx will rejoice and sacrifice lambs to the intel gods after he reads this but since I am a person of fair play and giving cred where its due I could NOT overlook this article which to an AMD fan such as myself is some cause for concern... its Intels' Memron processor which is a new Mobile processor and what intel should be using as a desktop processor by now. We all know that the Pentium M which is a very brilliant progeny of the famed PIII is a A64 competitor. It offers some excellent performance at MUCH lower clocks than the Water heater.. I mean precott even if it costs substantially more. Basically Meron (yuh know if yuh change that e with an o you'd get moro... ^_^) is a revised or rather supposedly totally re-engineered cpu and if the performance leap is anything like the following article say, AMD has its work cut out for it in the upcoming year, have a read:

Intel's Merom is going to rock

New Intel CPU to shine

By Fuad Abazovic: Wednesday 27 July 2005, 08:21
INTEL'S NEXT generation mobile core has already taped out, as we reported last week. It works and Intel is happily showing it to its customers as it brings some light to the end of the constipation in Intel's current product range.

Intel is hoping its next gen products will give it a performance boost in 2006 and in the future. It made many missteps but it will eventually phase out its long in the tooth Netbust marchitecture, as we reported here.

According to documents seen by the INQ, the Merom mobile CPU will succeed the upcoming Yonah CPU. Yonah is planned for the end of 2005, and it's a 65 nanometre dual core mobile CPU, although Intel is also planning a single core version. Merom will also be a dual core CPU, built on 65 nanometre marchitecture but will be based on a new marchitecture, which the chip giant is flagging as more advanced and efficient than the one used for Banias/Dothan CPUs. Compared with previous Banias marchitecture CPUs it’s expected that Merom will end up twenty to thirty per cent faster per clock.

We know that some companies are very excited about the new Intel mobile CPUs and it already rulez the market with its Banias based Celeron Ms and Dothan based Pentium M chips.

Never be a fan to a company.

amd having a bit more competition is a bad thing??
i fail to see how.  The processor industry has been in a rut the last couple of years.  I mean,  The early coming 3700+ was able to oc under good water or better cooling to 2.8GHz, providing very close performance to the current 2.8GHz fx57. dual channel didn't help benches as much as the increase in cost to 939 implied. I'm DAMNED happy intel has something that MAY give the hammer a tough time. That's called progress/better price/performance ratios for the consumer.

but wait aren't these things STILL for laptops ? that means  they STILL will need a special socket .. any desktop motherboards for it will be as rare as hens teeth and expensive as pearls...  and intel's desktop chips may very well stick with Pressoverhot core logic ...... correct me if i'm wrong ?

There are 2 main motherboards for the celeron-m /pentium-m. In fact, gamepc.com has been selling the pentium-m desktop for a while now as a viable solution. Aopen and dfi are the 2 pentium-m mobo makers. Asus has a special socket for their 478 board, that only costs $30 us or so, and will let you rrun the pentium-m or celeron-m in the socket. These chips are pin compatible with the 478 p4, so that socket adapter was nice to se. Finally, for those living the way of the mad modder, or those wanting tiny, there's the commel LV-671 and LV-673 mini-ITX motherboards, that toss everything includint the kitchen sink into that tiny package.
