Wine - ing? : linux/windows emulation

  I want to run WINE is a second OS ,  in case an uber virus nukes my windows install ,  can  it run DX9 games and windows drivers properly ?   Do i need  a linux distro  to install it ontop of? can i access stuff from my windows partition without having to install it over?

If you run wine then you would need a linux distro. Linux should be able access a ntfs partition, depends on the distro.

while I am a big advocate of all things open source, I think you'd be better off backing up your windows partition with Ghost in case of a nuke, than having a concurrent wine setup.
