OS X on a W1ndows Machine
« on: March 09, 2005, 09:19:58 AM »
For those that have used a mac at any point in their life for any extended period of time. They will know what it was great, faster than w1indows of its time, with lower hardware requirements (though I am sure the price made up for that difference). In recent times, @pple has been getting better and better with its OS (even though plaagued with hardware problems). Now to those that have used OS X, that is a dream OS come true, smooth, pretty, EASY TO USE, and recognises almost everything for u (no need to find driver online, pull hair out as in some ALL MS OSes). Now what would u say if I said that OS X would run on an X86 based machine? well it is a flavour of BSD and i've read that @pple already has had OS X running on X86 machines. However thats not a reality to the masses. Enter the OS X emulator which can be bought for 50US or downloaded for trial. THe product is called Cherry OS and u can run Mac OS X (after u download it from the @pple website). Here is a link to the site:
cherry OS
I will attempt to download it ( it could be quite large so it might be a prob for me) if anyone manages to get it, do tell.

There are other pieces of software that can do the same thing. I used to have one before my pc crashed. I can't even remember the name. I just remember running Linux while in Win XP.

pearPC was too buggy. I never could get it to work right but for earlier versions of mac OS there was an emu that worked great. I was even able to install of the original OS 8 CD and it supported virtual drives so that you could share files between the MAC and WIN OS. I'll dig up for it in my archives and give you all the name if you interested but I am curious about Cherry OS.

Found it an interesting topic and did some research

turns out that like other emulators it runs above the already running OS so performance will take a hit

as for claims that it is almost as fast as native hardware, I cannot see that possible unless you are running a lot of redundancy ie lots of RAM and a powerful CPU

if you look around online there also seems to be some debate about PearPC and Cherry OS being virtually the same source code repackaged. if you had problems with PearPC then you will have problems with Cherry OS

If it sounds too good to be true...

anyone actually seen that osx code running on PC hardware?

hacked or otherwise?

I heard it's pretty fast. Faster than on Mac hardware.

I think it's actually blazing fast on PC Hardware, like boot in 10 seconds kinda fast. I think any reports of slowness are because of running on VMWare which by virtue of that make things slow. Of course Vista on the site claims to load at 2-3 seconds but we shall see.

Let me think about that carefully.... a beautiful OS built on UNIX, tried, tested and true... as opposed to 'new' OS supposedly built from the ground up, costing as much as putting a man on the moon cause they started over at some point in between, by a company who makes software with more holes in it than back of a CRT monitor (cooling) and I hear supporting DRM... hmm yeah... i'll take "W1nTry: OSX for $1000 Alex";"Alex: The answer is... no daily Trouble".

I heard it's pretty fast. Faster than on Mac hardware.

Tariq brought a Dell notebook with it.  Quite decent speed.  If it runs slow, there's a file you need to delete, depending on the variant of the OS X image you are using.

I did a post about it somewhere.  Might be in the TTLUG archives.

early on - yes, later on, HELL no - least till osx came along.
It took osx to really make the os as functional as i would like. I just wish they didn't go with the mach kernel. Big bad bottleneck for running a server. Nicest gui on a posix system though :)
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

I think that could be historical because the Mach kernel was related to the NeXT OS when Jobs left Apple.

Basilisk was my favourite Mac emulator of all time. hardware used to work fine. and the speed was real good for slower pentium 3s.
