 Mine : X-700 pro HIS with big heatsink.... or an SM3.0 card from ATI next year .  

estimated cost : 200 USD .
 
Stats : Athlon XP 3200, 512 DDR 400 , radeon 8500 128mb .

i recommend : Sempron 2800 for all those with athlon 1600/ P4 1.7ghz cpus . 9600 non pro/9550 for all those with Geforce 2 or less

need A Very Good optical drive DVD burner (one with top notch writing quality and very good loading times) might be either plexor or pioneer

either x700 or 6600 gt
flat panel monitor (once the prices drop)
sata hdd either a western digital raptor 10000RPM 40GB or any 160 GB sata (not sure which one yet)

my laptop handlin everything right now, but I looking @ the 6600GT and a Athlon 64 3000 - 3200. Preferably in a SFF box. That is portable power for sweatage immc.

Hopefully by time I really need that power, the Athlon 64 scene will be even better.

well i have a decent laptop at home with a 2.8 ghz processor 512 ram 60 gb had and a dvd rw plus a wide screen and a radeon 9000 128mb

modest but enough for me, the lappy cool i mean it even has built in wireless support, but for gaming i got the Xbox

the X-700 is due for release NOW , the X-700 pro is currantly shipping to stores,  the X-700XT is due to start shipping next month, the agp versions will be out before christmas .
  Its not much faster than your 9800 pro [30% max] ....  neither is the 6800GT , i'd say stikk with the 9800 til AMD PCX  and dual cores come out, and upgrade then [ ATI SM3.0 out nex year ]   ,  try some overclocking between now on then, it makes for quite a hobby  .
   I believe you shouldn't upgrade unless you can get something fairly cheap, and at least 3-4 times as fast... or  the games don't play at all, play at 10 fps etc....

 For all those looking for X-800XTs , buy a X-800 pro VIVO , they can soft mod to XT PE speeds  and overclock even farther .

LOL, i'll admit those are impressive peices of hardware, water cooled, highly overclocked.... I configured one online not too long ago.... I went for things I dream of having... however at the end of the day it was 13000+ US, then I built the highest d3ll available... a whoping 8G (wow... whaev), but nothing compares to the AWESOME 16G the TOP apple Dual 2.5GHz G5 costs.... all the same, impressive, but I agree with the author of this topic, build it urself dude.
