Indeed the fire TV doesn't allow USB hard drives yet. I am pretty sure it will at some point, don't see any reason it won't. Oh and root will be available soon.

don't see any reason it won't.
Two Words.....Amazon Prime
Amazon will make it very difficult for you to connect a local disk to that box. They want you to stream and use their video service.
People side loading XBMC are already cutting into their action.
At present, those people need to play non amazon content via a network share with that method. Requires a little technical know how so they need not worry about mass adoption.
If they could attach a local drive well now all bets are off. lol
Not to mention, gaining root on the device won't be child's play and effectively kills the auto update train.
Still....excited to see how the box performs in the flesh for $99.99. Bring eeet!

Actually I just read that root will be available shortly. I'll post the instructions when they become available. I don't think anything hardware wise will prevent USB disk drive access. Don't think this device is any more locked down than the average carrier locked cell Android phone.
In terms of losing auto update train, I suppose we can't get it both ways. Still for $99 it's great. I actually don't plan on using it with a USB drive, streaming everything from my pi so doesn't really matter to me.

Waiting to see. My money is that it won't be child's play.
The kindle fire root process is pretty involved.
I expect no less for the fire TV

incidentally, came across this on intel's site
a full on guide for making your nuc an HTPC.
http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/nuci3hometheatersolutionguide_v02.pdf
the steps should work if you are ever able to get linux going on the Kinde TV
pretty comprehensive and great for reference

As an update to this topic, Google is set to release their Nexus Player, a set top box to compete with all the myriad of options mentioned here.
http://www.google.com/intl/all/nexus/player/
It also looks very similar to the Tronsmart Vega in design.
Fun times ahead.
Pretty happy with my NUC but will keep an eye on how this progresses.

Are you using a setup similar to that of your previous post?

Yes I am, with very small differences.
The NUC I own has a built in IR receiver...so there is no need for the usb dongle. (All of the newer NUCs have incorporated it on board which is great. Saves a port)
Secondly, instead of usb attached storage, I store my media on a hard drive attached to my Asus RT N66u router.
This way the router doubles as a mini-NAS for the entire network (from which critical data is synchronized over the internet to another location for disaster recovery purposes)
Works pretty good. Best setup I've had in years.
