The Pebble E-paper Smartwatch
« on: February 14, 2013, 12:11:14 AM »
My brother just got a new piece of tech today and ress it on yours truly to 'field-test'...

The Pebble E-paper Smartwatch

http://vimeo.com/pebble/kickstarter

Very cool watch.

Connects to your Android or iOS device via bluetooth, and once you install the app, you can push notifications from almost any app on your device to the watch.
I'm talking emails, texts, IM apps like Google Talk/WhatsApp...you name it.  If the app presents a notification, it can be pushed to the watch.
Even with phone calls, the caller ID/name is clearly displayed, and the watch actually vibrates with each notification (which takes some getting used to :laughing7: )

So now you no longer have to miss a key notification if you don't have your phone on you.  it still has to be within bluetooth range though.
You can have your phone totally silent and never miss an event.  Win.

The real winner for me though, is the fact that I can control the PowerAmp music player via the watch's built-in 'music' controls,
and yes, I can stream that very music to my LG Tone+ headset at the same time.

It comes with a magnetically attachable USB charge cable.  One charge is supposed to last a full week.  We shall see.

The fact that the watch is also firmware upgradeable, means that the possibilities for new types of functionality are immediately available.
Unfortunately, the watch is only available from the makers' Kickstarter page, and with about 80 THOUSAND units on back-order, there's no guarantee
when you'll get one if you decide to order.  Now I wish had ponied up for one back in April when the project was launched.

Still, this thing has potential to be great with a few more firmware updates.

...but ain't technology grand though?  :happy0203:

* TriniWyatt runs around screaming like a little girl

I haven't used a watch in years since my binary one got a crack on the surface.

Was an excellent conversation starter

This Pebble E-Paper smartwatch looks like a damn fine replacement.

Just in time for valentines too.

Well played Arc, well played.

That watch looks epic. The only thing that concerns me is the battery drain from constant Bluetooth

Everything else looks really good. Much more discrete than checking your phone every minute or having it sit out on the desk during meetings.

This guy gets it.   :laughing7:

Based on user reviews and impressions, it should only result in a 5-10% increase in battery drain.
I'll be able to tell after a week of solid use.

...and look at that...just got a notification about 'open wi-fi networks'.  :happy0203:  Nice.
