D-Link DIR 655 Problem and Router Recommendation
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:46:15 AM »
Over the years, I have used a great many wireless routers.

Seen them cause more than their fair share of woe for customers. Internet drop outs and dismal performance in general.

Enter the D-Link DIR 655

A router that I considered to be the best in the business upon its release. Been using one myself and recommended it heartily to many.

However, after a recent firmware update, it has begun to behave suspiciously. Did some digging online and came across this.

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10339.0

Apparently I am not alone in the discovery.

The device doesn't seem to tolerate any hiccups in the connection. So whenever there is a spike, it renders my internet useless for a few minutes. Enough to annoy the hell out of me and worse, to earn a disconnect loss in a game of Starcraft 2.

It is with a heavy heart that I must now look to another router to replace this once champion of cyberspace.

Two that I have short listed:

http://www.amazon.com/RT-N16-Wireless-N-Maximum-Performance-single/dp/B00387G6R8/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1316951137&sr=1-3

Both have rave reviews online and support opensource firmware (a huge plus)

One is low end and the other high end.

Any other recommendations to be considered? What sayeth my fellow Tech denizens?

I can attest to the Asus brand they have been quietly been putting out a good line of wireless routers wl300 series. They are also perfect if you plan on going open source, especially with their comparability with -art and tomato.

Why upgrade the firmware in the 1st place if you weren't having any problems?  :confused5:

I hate to say it, but you look for that.

lol, I was expecting you to say "it good!"

but when it comes to routers, I must confess....I am a firmware update obsessive compulsive.

Hate to see my router running Firmware version 1.0001A when the latest is ver 9.674B

Always get the feeling that there are new features, bug fixes and updates that I'm missing out on. lol

Nice to get a +1 for the Asus from Slamming.

I think that's my next stop. RT N-10 or RT N-16 immc.

I hope the opensource firmware gives the option to lock down the internet on a schedule.

That feature on the DIR 655 was absolutely essential in ensuring the kids aren't up late at night online.
