Project Denver : Why Nvidia wants an ARM-based CPU
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:24:48 AM »
Just read this and found this interesting.... wonder if they could give competiton to intel in a few years?

:nvidia:

Nvidia has confirmed that it is developing a lineup of ARM-based CPUs designed to power personal computers, servers, and even supercomputers.

Dubbed "Project Denver," this admirable and potentially lucrative initiative is based on the concept of an indigenously designed CPU running a RISC instruction set.

According to Nvidia chief scientist Bill Dally, the upcoming ARM-based CPU will be "fully integrated" onto a single chip along with an Nvidia GPU.

"Project Denver is extremely important, [as it will] usher in a new era for computing by extending the performance range of the ARM instruction-set architecture, enabling the ARM architecture to cover a larger portion of the computing space," explained Dally.

"Coupled with an Nvidia GPU, it will provide the heterogeneous computing platform of the future by combining a standard architecture with awesome performance and energy efficiency."

The chief scientist emphasized that ARM was already the "standard architecture" for mobile devices.

"ARM's modern architecture, open business model, and vibrant eco-system have led to its pervasiveness in cell phones, tablets, and other embedded devices," he said.

"And Project Denver extends the range of ARM systems upward to PCs, data center servers, and supercomputers. Denver is the catalyst that will enable these same factors to propel ARM to become pervasive in higher-end systems."

Dally also predicted that Denver would "free" PCs, workstations and severs from the "hegemony and inefficiency" of traditional x86 architecture.

"For several years, makers of high-end computing platforms have had no choice about instruction-set architecture. The only option was the x86 instruction set with variable-length instructions, a small register set, and other features that interfered with modern compiler optimizations, required a larger area for instruction decoding, and substantially reduced energy efficiency.

"But Denver provides a choice. System builders can now choose a high-performance processor based on a RISC instruction set with modern features such as fixed-width instructions, predication, and a large general register file. These features enable advanced compiler techniques and simplify implementation, ultimately leading to higher performance and a more energy-efficient processor."

He added that an ARM processor - paired with an Nvidia GPU - represented the computing platform of the future.

"A high-performance CPU with a standard instruction set will run the serial parts of applications and provide compatibility while a highly-parallel, highly-efficient GPU will run the parallel portions of programs.

"The result is that future systems - from the thinnest laptops to the biggest data centers, and everything in between - will deliver an outstanding combination of performance and power efficiency. Their processors will provide the best of both worlds, while enabling increased battery life for mobile solutions."

That's the thing not sure if it's all FUD tactics

I hadda admit when I see FUD I was like....

What food have to do with this?? :laughing6:

We've discussed this in the past and basically from what i've read the current top of the line that Nvidia can put out is about on par with a Core 2 Duo E7400 or something such, which let's face it ain't even enough for the most powerful games of today. Couple that with Intel tic toc development cycle, Nvidia ain't gonna catch up anytime too soon.

The UP side of this of course is choice. With the advent of ARM desktop computing we may see more on the smart device side (no duh) as we now have a GPU developer in the fray in a bigger way. Time will tell how this all plays out, as for atm, it's not much more than yawning FUD.

I figured this is as good a place as any to post this:

ARM will power 20 per cent of laptops by 2015
Should light a fire under AMD and Intel
By Lawrence Latif
Tue Jul 19 2011, 14:08

CHIP DESIGNER ARM could power over 20 per cent of all laptops shipped in 2015, according to analyst outfit IHS Isuppli.

IHS Isuppli has forecast that the domination of X86 chips in the laptop market will start to diminish as Microsoft releases its Windows 8 operating system. Windows 8 will be the first desktop operating system from Microsoft that will support the ARM architecture that is found in just about every smartphone in existence.

Worryingly for AMD and Intel, IHS Isuppli predicted that ARM will do extensive damage in the mainstream notebook market, the most lucrative market segment for chip makers. The firm describes this market as currently being served by AMD's E-series and Intel's Atom and Celeron M processors.

Isuppli's Matthew Wilkins said, "ARM is well suited for value notebooks, where performance isn't a key criterion for buyers. Value notebook buyers are looking for basic systems that balance an affordable price with reasonable performance. ARM processors deliver acceptable performance at a very low cost, along with unrivalled power efficiency."

What this means is that Nvidia, the firm that was never granted an X86 license by Intel, could well end up flogging chips that are in direct competition with Intel's core products. IHS Isuppli also predicted good things for ARM chip designers Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.

ARM told The INQUIRER last month that it is working hard on increasing the graphics power of its system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Currently Mali represents the firm's highest performing graphics core but ARM claims that it will have games console levels of graphics power on its low-power chips within 18 months.

Although the Linux kernel has supported ARM architectures for years, there's no doubt that Microsoft's Windows 8 support will bring mass consumer appeal for ARM chips on desktop and laptop computers. An ARM representative told The INQUIRER that Windows 8 support will help the firm gain traction in the server market, another market that is dominated by X86 chips from AMD and Intel.

IHS Isuppli still foresees 80 per cent of the laptop market running on X86 chips, so it isn't panic stations for AMD or Intel just yet. However should ARM manage to take close to 20 per cent in just four years from a standing start, then questions will begin to be asked about the long term viability of the X86 architecture in general purpose computing. µ

Look who it is, british version of FUD lol.

I only really see arm making significant headway in the netbook/lower end notebook/tablet space. I've never gotten the impression that it was meant to be a replacement for higher end, more powerful x86 based hardware.

agreed... but i think the lower end segment might really be 20%.. maybe less
