Came across another cool app while browsing thru the repositories, it is called tinysmb, and lets your N900 share folders on your windows network. I loaded it up and in a few minutes I was sharing my phone's folders to other computers on my network. This would really come in handy when you need to get files etc. and forgot your data cable. Also lets u copy/share data wherever you go since wifi networks are pretty common, usb flash drives might not be as necessary hehe.

OK...so I got Mumble working...and was soon chatting away like normal over wi-fi.

Lawd have mercy...and it even recognised my BT headset as mic/speaker right off the bat too.

The win just keeps on trucking with this phone yes.  :)

Got mumble working on my Nexus One. Android giving Maemo a run for they money oui.

Lol yeah I was actually looking at Android for my next phone, but even after a year my N900 still does all I need. How is your battery life on the Nexus One?

Nowhere as good as my bb 9700. Since I got it I always have it plugged in via usb doing some $hit. When I leave the house for some extended period ill have a better idea.

Yeah that is the case with these high end smartphones, they are powerful but battery technology hasn't really kept up even with all the power saving features...

That was the killer problem 10 years ago with the ipaqs. You mean to tell me, they still have you tethered to a socket with these androids/n900s?

The blackberry does a respectable 1-2 days with decent usage before needing an umbilical.

Looking forward to hear the real world experience from you two where power is concerned.

Well yeah the blackberry phones do have decent battery life, but remember these more high end smartphones are more laptop than smartphone in terms of their versatility. I don't think battery technology has really caught up to these devices. Battery life always seems to be an issue in any mobile device with a large HD screen along with processing power. In terms of ipaqs, I don't think these smartphones are THAT bad but there is always room for improvement.

But yeah coming back to the N900 as I mentioned before, the battery life is one of the phone's weaknesses and hopefully newer Nokia models will show drastically improved usage times.

I love Symbian, but im not convinced that it is gaining traction in the mobile market, if anything it is loosing.

IMO, awesome specs on that camera with phone features but it is all lost on Symbian. Meego and Android or bust.

got damn at that phone woody.

You really don't need a bloody laptop with one of those.

Talk about convergence, PDA, Phone, Laptop, GPS, Camera, Voice Recorder, Navigator, Radio, Flash Drive all in one device.

Probably need a small nuclear power plant to power that thing though.

I put aside my N900, trying Android for a bit.....
« Reply #75 on: November 13, 2010, 06:47:12 PM »
...well not exactly :p I came across an interesting project called NITDroid (
http://wiki.nitdroid.com/index.php?title=Main_Page ) which stands for Nokia Internet Tablet Android, basically they've been working on getting Froyo to run on the N900. I tried their latest build today and was blown away. It is pretty easy to install and I must say I was very impressed with the extensive Android marketplace.

Just to show how these phones are more like computers with phones built into them you can even multiboot into the OS of your choice similar to multibooting operating systems on your PC via boot loaders. Anyway it is still a work in progress and they have gotten VERY far. The only 2 things that need to be added are voice call support (it can make/receive calls but no mic yet) and well it does seem to eat battery since you must run it off the SD card (installable version coming next)

It is funny how I stumbled upon this, some friends were showing me the ability to use Ping Chat on Iphones and Blackberries to communicate cross platform, of course there isn't any for Maemo but I saw an Android version available so I knew I had to try NITdroid. Oh and Ping Chat works flawlessly on NITDroid :p

I must say Android is a pretty cool OS after playing around with it a bit, I like the extensive software library on marketplace.

Update: Found a fix, microphone now works...

Yea it is boss. Only bad thing I found out this week is that it doesnt support proxy via wifi which sucks if you connect to a network that is configured to work through a firewall, you're screwed. There are programs that get around this but I have not been able to get them to work.

Hopefully gingerbread or some future build will take care of this. Other than that its a dream.
