I know this is SUPER necro...but I couldn't sleep...and decided to take in the 'Disney-fied' english-dubbed version of this movie.
While not as solid storywise as Princess Mononoke, or Spirited Away, I could understand where Hayao Miyazaki was going with this one.
At times the story may not make sense, but thats only because you're like...older than eight years old, and you expect everything you watch
to conform to some sort of solid narrative. Ponyo throws all that out the window. Cold, hard adult logic has no business here...and thats a good thing.
The movie is a real visual treat in the most classic 'anime' style. In the age of all these 3D CGI, Pixar productions (never liked those as much anyway)
its a real treat to see uncompromising, unabashed, lovingly hand-drawn animation from one of the masters of the craft. If you've seen Howl's Moving Castle,
or Princess Mononoke, then you're familiar with Miyazaki's work. The attention to detail here, especially in the opening sequences is really a sight to behold.
This is the type of film flat-screen and 1080P was made for.
...and thats the thing with Miyazaki's productions...the kid in you can't help but be drawn in. Storyline be damned. It felt really good watching this,
and I shall watch it again tomorrow. I will most certainly buy the Blu-Ray version for baby-girl to watch in a few years.
This one is a real treat for the kiddies folks...and you just might like it a little bit more than you expect to.
