computer build problem

i was tryin to put some pc components together for my new pc build. i installed the psu, mobo, ram , cpu and aftermarket cooler, and hooked up the front panels connectors. i went on to test the system by plugging to an outlet (didn't have a ups at the time). i forgot to plug the cpu cooler to the mobo but everything else was plugged (including atx 24 pin from psu). whe i turned the system on their was an immediate spark around where the mobo lights are so i took off the system. on turnin it on again i realised that the cpu cooler fan wasn't connected so i fixed that. however, when i turned the system on again there was no spark but the cooler fan remained off.
did i fry the mobo or cpu? ( the mobo isn't touching the metal case).
components
Gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3 - mobo
Corsair cx400 - psu
intell e5200 - cpu

An unconnected cpu fan certainly wont cause anything to spark. DId the spark happen anywhere near the cpu?
Sounds to me like that mobo definitely ground off on something. I'd say its prolly dead.

Spark = short...which most likely occured under the mobo somewhere.
I've seen that happen a few times. Most likely, you fried the mobo.
The built-in failsafes will always try to protect the CPU.
Still, try the CPU in another mobo to make sure.
Sorry to say, you're in a serious bind there. You now have to stress-test all the other components to
make sure they weren't damaged, or you could get 'burned' by one of them again in a new build.
Oh jah...that is a real scene there.

-what case you using?
make sure that the mobo tray not warped, especially if you using one of those flimsy cases available locally
-how much did you screw down the HSF?
the stock fan actually warps the mobo a bit when on you wont notice it unless you look down from the top, this holds true for most push pin applied hsf's. i noticed this the fist time i did my 775 build, i did not like it one bit and went out and bought a CM replacement HSF
if you placed one of those screw down types you have to remember to only secure it, ENOUGH, there is such a thing as over tightening
If you had a back-plate and the plate was on the other way around, then you basically short everything out
these are pretty easy to overlook, i still tripple check these things with a tester when i do a new build, but that is just me i paranoid no ass.
if your mobo is gone go to hard o/c thread and put a dibs on that p5q-l quick, is a good mobo and i can tell you that the e5200 reached 3.4Ghz @ 1.3v easily on it

^^^ when i go home i'll double check with your advice.
but i don't want to make a hurried decision and say the mobo failed. i want to carry it to a pc expert to get it tested. any suggestions? on the east west?

arc's from the east. If he's not interested, I'm sure one of the tech squad guys would be game. (pardon the pun)
Let me know by this evening, if arc does not respond and we can set something up. pm or so.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the necessary parts at the moment to do that sort of testing.
As for shops that do that...I wouldn't know any.
