I think the correct approach is to look for a win win situation. Like crixx alluded to earlier, give the people what they want.

Right now, that seems to be green (translated in real world to cleaner fuels)

CNG, LNG, SOLAR, etc....

It is a step in the right direction and yes, many of the old school energy companies will make the shift to supplying these products rather than fade into oblivion. They have the resources, $$$ and business savvy to dominate the worlds fiercest market after all.

At the same time, technology that can shake up the energy industry and help save the planet is always welcome. I hope these guys are on to something w!ith this discovery.

Actually completely green prolly doesn't exist. Think about it there are caveats to every source of power:
Alcohol, gasohol, CNG, etc - they are STILL hydrocarbons and thus emit Green house gases
Electric - Solar panel - Requires batteries - still not 90% efficient, batteries contain harmful metals that are difficult to dispose of and batteries have a finite shelf life.
Wind - (prolly most green), requires wind DUH, expensive infrastructure and maintainance and cannot be deployed universally.
Nuclear- I doh even have to talk about this...
Fusion (hot and cold) - still in infancy, ridiculously inefficient atm and dangerous (hot)
Wave generation - (akin to wind) - difficult to deploy - undetermined effect on underwater marine life.

So basically even if we go 'green' we're not nearly as green as we should be

'They did, and you know what happened? the WORLD went into recession. The largest consumer in the world IS the US. If they stop buying alot of countries economies will suffer. We're seeing it all now.

The recession was cause by buying too much s**t with imaginary money. But yes, the recession would be worse if they were to stop buying so much s**t. Economic environment is just as important as natural environment, though. If they US doesn't buy -everyone- else suffers, and not just from a consumeristic standpoint. It'l pretty much end up being a anarcho-capitalist/marxist nightmare state of affairs.

However, a move away from the monetary system would go hand in hand with a move towards environmentally safer consumption. Blah, blah, blah..theory, theory, theory. It's really complicated theory.

Also, contrary to popular belief, nuclear energy falls under green energy. (output-waste ratio is ridiculously high, waste can be disposed efficiently without destorying the environment and nuclear power plants are so much safer than they were in their infancy)

yes americas love of imaginary money is indeed the culprit and not reduced consumer expenditure.

people have such a bitter taste in their mouths from the last set of nuclear plant melt downs that in this time of green talk, they have a really hard battle to fight to convince people.

And the major waste product of nuclear plants is water vapour and waste hot water.
releasing more water vapour into atmosphere not greatest idea.

Even hydrogen cell engines derived from water as the hyrdrogen source, is the best option but still creates all that water vapour. if it could be balanced with reduced consumption resulting in reduced production, then we would have a winning ticket.
