WTB: Motherboard with TWO IDE ports
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:26:26 PM »
Sigh. I can't believe I'm even asking for this, but I know such boards exist:

An example: MSI K9N4 SLI-F

Preferably socket AM2 or 775

reason for wanting this: A customer is upgrading and gave me money to acquire a good board. the thing is when I explained to him that all new boards have only 1 IDE port, meaning he can't use 2 of his 3 IDE burners and 1 IDE hard drive and thus will need to switch to SATA drives, the dude start to say them boards is "sh1t boards" and insist I must get a dual IDE port board.

I have it sooooo nice with customers, don't I?

anyone know where I can purchase such a board new, let me know. push come to shove, I'll just buy one of those IDE Raid controller cards if they cheap enough. If you know where i can get one that supports IDE burners, that be good too.
God is dead.

Well more or less.

I just don't know where or how I get these people as customers.

I really not feeling the importing part and i don't understand WHY he needs to have THREE optical drives (DVD-ROM, combo drive, DVD Burner).

If I were wicked I'd sell him my own AMD board if he wanted the 2IDE ports so badly, but I want no warranty issues either.

Saw the P6N SLI Platinum, but it is out of budget for what i want to do

you can buy a regular borad with one ide and get ide to sata converters for for the remaining drivers.
OR
You can try to trade him for his ide drives with sata drives and he pay the difference on the sata drives, and then you sell them here. know how quick drives get sold on gatt.

I did mention this as an option in the opening post. I just wondering if cables that long are still sold, and any potential compatibility/reliability issues in using such. I done don't like to visit this guy.

Not a bad idea at all. but i doh wanna get stuck with socket A parts while he has a new video card....

UPDATE:

Managed to convince him to buy my Asus M2N32 WS Professional motherboard.

I have a Biostar GF7050 motherboard and an E2200 lying around, so I'll be using that with my 9800GTX for the while, till I decide on what will make up my next upgrade.  :happy0203:

Oh yeah: If anyone has an the AM2 plastic bracket for attaching stock AM2 heatsinks, say from a dead AM2 board, i'll need such asap. thanks

Hmmmm....man using a biostar board in he main rig dey? And what is it with you people and this 9800gtx? It sucks ass.

And next gen is right around the corner, (read about a week) so at the very least those cards will come down a good $50 in price.

Geez. Is a temporary setup till I obtain a proper replacement board. Ah not selling drugs like you to be buying US$200 motherboards on a whim you know. Plus I need a functional system to use.

If you have an issue with my upgrade, please state it in a manner that I can comprehend.

Neither of you have asked why I made such a upgrade. so, when you ready to deal with me in a critical thinking manner. let me know and I'll explain

Come on guys...the 9800 is still a bess card.  Not much of an upgrade but hey, at least its PCI-E 2.0 compliant.
An X38/48 or 780i/790i board will exploit it to the fullest.

...so now you know which board to get. :happy0203:

lol @ critical thinking manner... ... i don't have a problem with the card honestly, just wondering what could make a man move from a decent 8800gt (which ain't badly off) to a 9800gtx.

ok then Saxman, explain to me why you made such an upgrade and we are in a pivotal time with respect to graphics cards?

Actually, Arc, I was doing some research, and it seems as though PCI-E 1.1 still provides enough bandwidth to satisfy even the 9800gx2 in the majority of instances. In light of that, I may just mellow down with this p35 for the time being and do the MB upgrade a month or two after the video card.

- 9800GTX is  a tad lower than 8800GT SLI or 9600Gt SLI  without actually needing two cards. No, it is not that big of an upgrade. I mean my stock 3DMark06 score only jump to 11100 from 10500 with the previous card, admittedly, but when you consider that I am finally gonna switch to Intel from AMD, oh you will see benefits then!!

- My PSU is 600W which is just above the power requirements for a 9800GTX or higher, and I not buying a new PSU unless my current one fries.

- I paid US$270 for my 800GT six months ago. I end up selling the card to a white school boy who wanted to upgrade, and it so happened he really needed it cause the fan on his 6800XT failed. He was even celebrating his birthday the day I installed it. I needed a card and decided to but the 9800GTX -the cheapest as of a week ago being US$270- it was in the same -or slightly higher- performance class.

- yes I probably could/should have held out for a GTX280, but I am not aware of what price it will come out at and I not really prepared to spend more than US$300 on a video card at this point time. Maybe that will change in the future.

- Capt. Awesome himself mentioned prices always coming down on computer parts. Yes the 9800GTX will most likely go down in price by US$50 or more in the next six months, I can sell the 9800GTX for good money to some next "I want it now!" person and get the GTX280. I can afford it, so I will do it.  (Note: local suppliers still selling the 8800GT for TT$2200 and higher, the white boy paid $1400 for my used one and I only suffer about $200 loss)

BTW the 8800GT is actually PCIE 2.0, Arc

8800gt is 2.0 compliant indeed. But its not powerful enough to need the bandwidth of a 2.0 slot.

Sax, I thought u sold the 8800 in a calculated effort to upgrade to the 9800gtx. But looking at the series of events as they happened, t'was a logical move.

9800gtx move understood, i apologize for my ignorance.

good god at 2200 for an 8800gt in trinidad, imagine if that was sold in tobago. If a 6200pci-e card sells for 700tt here.. imagine the 8800gt's price  :shakehead:.

VERY GOOD IDEA - if you want to rip off people
Last Time i went Tobago sometime in 2007:

USB Cable - $65
USB Extension Cable - $950
80GB IDE Hard Drive - $700

I would hope that prices come down by now i better take a trip across there this month end and see how the market is
