Well this wasnt totlly unexpected after their recent woes with the Phenom and the AM2+/K10 architecture. I hope they get their ish together before they go bankrupt in truth. In the mean time, this means super cheap AMD cpu's for everyone...well for those that want them.

All I have to say is should the ONLY X86 (we don't consider VIA) competitor go under I would hope and wish for a company like Samsung to buy them, case if they were to get bought over by a company THAT large with THAT much tech and engineering at its disposal, well we'd see some REAL fireworks and a quaking intel. But such are just dreams atm. In the least we NEED for AMD to stick around eh remember that ppl!

Yes we do need amd to keep intel on their toes, and for freedom of choice, if it were not for amd we wouldn't have quad cores so cheap :P so everyone remember amd is the innovator we need to get better stuff, tho I think amd should not have bought ati, as they are ruining ati :-( that once proud well run giving nvidia a good run for their money company now look what amd did, it seems everything amd touches goes to sh!t these days.

I wouldn't say that considering the HD3xxx series is QUITE good and ATI is winning quite a bit of design wins for said cards. Not to mention its a forward looking architecture, we'll see how it pans out in the end. Either way I think ATI will be clawing back alot of market share this rounds, AMD on the other hand... and well DAAMIT as a whole geez... bleeding, bleeding... I still don't consider it for naught as AMD needed a solid PLATFORM which it now has (a chipset running at 10W??? COME ON MAN what intel could do to match that?) I just wonder what the hell was going on in the CPU engineering dept these past 2 years....

3870 is good, but it's late in the game, I'm sure amd was ( humm is ) having problems with their fabs and keeping ati back! the designes for 670 and now 700 are ready, it's just that ati now have to use amd fabs, and wait in line while the cpu makers make a mockery of things.

ATI like Nvidia don't fab their own chips, that's done at places like TSMC and UMC... the process tech wasn't the problem I figure, although keep in mind it is a 55nm chip vs. Nvidia's 65nm chips 88xx... so a shrink does take time, but will improve profits as you ft more die on the same area.
