Kids use donated laptops to surf porn
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:32:18 PM »

Quote
According to Reuters, "Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organization have used them to explore pornographic sites on the internet." The article says that the Nigerian government, who released the statement, felt the educational program had "gone awry" on account of the boobies, but did not say whether government officials were angry at the schoolchildren, angry with the US-based providers of laptops, or angry that they themselves did not have the necessary laptoppage to do some "exploring" of their own.

Although the laptops were not the celebrated OLPCs that will soon be manufactured for distribution throughout the developing world, OLPC officials were asked about the porn-savviness of the upcoming $180 laptop.

As someone who works with various security software and appliances daily, I can honestly say that content filtering is DIFFICULT to implement and is usually easy to bypass. What is usually required for effective content management is an ongoing updated database of WWW content which needless to say is impossibly huge. So that OLPC with filtering will either have to phone home to the mothership often for filter updates or will be obsolete in terms of nrop blocking the minute it ships unfortunately... if you ban images on a whole on the other hand it will work (all formats) but what would be the point of that...
