SEGA ANNOUNCES ONLINE MULTIPLAYER FUNCTIONALITY IN VIRTUA FIGHTER™ 5 FOR XBOX 360™

Premier Fighting Game Franchise Goes Online In Europe and North America

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (July 6, 2007) - SEGAŽ Europe, Ltd. and SEGAŽ of America, Inc. announced today that the highly-anticipated arcade fighting game, Virtua Fighter™ 5 for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, will feature an online versus mode at launch in Autumn 2007. The Xbox 360™ version of Virtua Fighter™ 5 is based on the latest arcade version update and features both analogue-stick and D-pad control, as well as vibration support. The game also includes an improved Quest mode featuring more CPU rivals, items, and emblems for character customisation. The DOJO mode has added features including leaderboards, training move settings, improved throw and escape training, and the option to change your opponent's position and recovery type. These all work to create a more refined DOJO mode where players can improve their fighting strategy.

Now featuring an online two-player versus mode via Xbox LiveŽ, Virtua Fighter™ 5 will allow players to compete online. Players will also be able to select one of the 17 characters or customise them in Quest mode. Customisation features allow players to modify their characters by selecting from four base costumes and then attaching a wide range of unlockable and earnable items. Players will not only achieve victory by defeating highly-skilled opponents, but also by competing for prizes and earning in-game money which allows them to buy many items at an in-game shop.

"For a lot of very good reasons, Virtua Fighter™ 5 is regarded as the deepest and most revered fighting game available on next generation consoles", said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe. "Bringing Virtua Fighter™ 5 to the Xbox 360™ will not only capture an entirely new audience, but will allow gamers to show their Virtua Fighter™ skills online against friends and foes"

Created by the renowned development team AM R&D Department #2 out of Japan, Virtua Fighter™ 5 will be released in Autumn 2007.

Ok all i have to say is chris dread... Virtua Fighter :/ i dont know how people could sit down and play this yes lol. Gameplay is no match for tekken or soul calibur and with phrases like " I can handcuff lightning" and bad voice acting.... this game just makes me wanna shoot myself >.<. That aside yay online play :D make every game online now the online takeover has begun!

Aside from the bad voice acting, the game is great.  If you like Tekken, you won't like VF.  Simple.
Two TOTALLY different fighting engines.  I like VF, but hate Tekken.

Saying 'gameplay is no match' makes no sense.   Apples and oranges...

no button mashing noob can win in virtua fighter, the difference in skill between a noob intermediate and expert can clearly be seen..unlike another popular 3d fighting game which I've notice noobs flock to, again I not calling names.

i like alot of fighting games lol virtua fighter style of gameplay just doesnt get me has nothing to do with combinations and i dont button mash lol. Characters look too.. normal stages look good but not my style and i really dont like games without a good story i cant even seem to remember VF story lol. My fave fighting game is Soul Calibur though.

Oh and btw its pretty stupid to assume that people button mash just because they play tekken in fact i havent ever met a button masher that can beat me in tekken lol ud have to be real lucky.

He didn't assume anything, but you just qualified his statement with that response.

I recall someone on here saying that having Online fighting games wouldn't work very well........HMMMMMM......As I said, Xbox Live is where the online experience is best, and developers are obviously trusting Live more than the competition. I wonder why? Maybe cause there is $50 a year well invested? As I said from the beginning, it makes MOST sense to have fighting games ONLINE as you compete with people around the world to test your skills. Playing Tekken or Soul Calibur, or Virtua Fighter on the same console limits you to YOU and your friend, period.

I have played on Live already (quite extensively also) and the connection is good but not overly great for fighters.  Until they can prove that there are minimal differences between offline and online play my thoughts still stand.

I play these games for more than just a friendly online sparring match with some noob, thats probably why I'm the only person who actually hosts tournaments for fighting games down here regularly or try to. I'm very competitive when it comes to fighters so I take this shit as seriously as the other "pro" gamer and will travel abroad to play in tournaments even though I have zero chance of winning, although have a win over a world reknowned player who happens to be probably skillwise the best player in the USA in CVS2, and has placed top 8 at Evolution in various games and coincidently is heading to Japan to compete at their most prestigious tournament series. Yeah its only 1 win, but how many other people could say that they beat one of the world's best down here ?

Online is great and all but whats the point of having online if it sucks, LIVE or not, if its done wrong like the rest of online fighters no one other than the casual gamers and a few extras will take it on seriously. Yeah I can hear the whole yeah well thats why it makes money and all that stuff but seriously if you're gonna use that on me please take a hint and stfu.

GGPO has given me hope though although its closed source atm. Still no input lag whatsoever is a step in the right direction.

I'll be waiting on Tekken 5 DR Online though, and yes I'm as giddy as the next Live mc to try VF5 online. I wonder how different will the 360 version be seeing thats its using the newer arcade revision.

I've gone way off track here.

BTW if any GOW mcs see this, I'm interested in doing a 2v2 GOW tourney sometime down the road. If anyone has any advice on how to approach this please pm me :)

fighting competition from all over the world constantly playing people who fight differently keeps the game exciting. If u playing friends only eventually u going to figure out how they all play id rather play online and see how others play and maybe pick up a few moves from the good ones :).

You'd be amazed how good you can get playing just "friends".  If either one or both of you are completely braindead and use the same tactics with little or no variation in strategy then of course it's not going to be a good experience.  Anyone who has at least half a brain can come up with some dope shit if they sat down to think things out.  If you can't, then there's always the net to step up your game with advice on everything concerning your game.

I suppose if you only play stagnating opponents who don't learn then perhaps I could see your point.

naw everyone learns new strategies but in the end there will always be a little that they do the same like whether they would rush in or back off in certain situations easy to learn. Anyway what about convenience playing CPU gets damn boring what about u wake up and feel like playing a strong opponent but no friends are around at the time and i cant see why having online could ever be a problem. And trust me u could learn alot more strategies playing online people than friends because strategies change with every oponent :D.

really id think the fighting enthusiasts would love to go online a pretty much show that they are the best and if it is they can find an opponent that can beat them maybe try to improve.

i see so just get a good internet connection lmao.. anyway i fail to see why anyone would complain about online play if u dont want it dont use it, its not like anyones forcing you. Its just an extra feature for those who would enjoy it like me for example :).

Just so you know good connections dont mean much, however latency does. You could have that 40gbit connection and all, but if the pings between you and your opponent are over 100ms guess what ?

GGPO is the best online gaming experience I had thus far for a fighting game, zero input lag and seemingly flawless gameplay between me and a few people , one even as far as alaska.

True talk.  I've tried Street Fighter II over Xbox Live and the lag is so bad, that I have not won a single match thus far.
For that reason, online fighters have never really impressed me much.  Its a cool feature but I won't use it unless I can get
ping times of 60 ms or LESS...
