THE WAY OF THE plastic milk container may soon be as dead as the Gerrothorax if eco-friendly manufacturer Greenbottle has its way.

British supermarket and change-patter's favourite Asda is this week running a trial to replace plastic milk bottles with a recycled cardboard alternative supplied by Greenbottle Ltd. The trial is underway at the Lowestoft Asda and has already received positive feedback, claims bottle inventor Martin Myerscough: "bottles have sold out in an hour and a half" over the last two days, Martin says.

Myserscough reckons the new packaging could be The Future For Milk, providing an ultra eco-friendly alternative to the plastic flavours. "The biodegradable bag acts a barrier for the milk, and when you are finished with the carton you tear the bag out and put it in the general rubbish. The cardboard can go in with paper collections, in with garden waste or home composted," Martin told letsrecycle.com.

Asda's not the only party interested. Cowlords Marybell Dairy, bigwig milk supplier across the UK, is very interested in adopting the new bottles across its ranges.

Best of all, the bottles are going for £1.20 which is about the same price for Marybell's plastic-bottled milk, though the cardboard variety is more expensive to manufacture. This should be less, however, if production steps up. µ

Now what about beer... I guess glass is already recycled...
