Real bandwidth for HD content
« on: March 27, 2007, 09:03:50 AM »
It never fails to amaze me how much wtf stuff Big blue comes up with (to those that don't know that's IBM)... imagine having this kinda bandwidth:

Big Blue boffins manage 160Gb/s downloads

Super speedy chipsets

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 27 March 2007, 08:52
IBM BOFFINS HAVE developed a prototype optical transceiver chipset that allows punters to download movies at 160Gigabits.

Blue uses light pulses instead of electrons to shift the data and the boffins believe it could be in the shops by 2010.

It is hoped that such technology will help prevent the Internet 'tubes' getting blocked as demand for broadband services swells.

TC Chen, vice president for science and technology at IBM Research said that the new chipset uses an optical transceiver with standard CMOS technology. It combines this with optical components made from indium phosphide and gallium arsenide. It is small enough at 3.25mm by 5.25mm to be integrated onto a printed circuit board.

It will take three years until suppliers can produce enough parts for IBM to bring optical transceivers into its product stream IBM says.

When it does, a PC using it will be able to reduce the download time of a typical high-definition feature-length movie from 30 minutes to one second. µ

personally, a high quality xvid looks perfectly fine. lol

more bandwidth gonna mean more HD (the storage variety) woes for me to store all that stuff.

my lame DSL already has all my HDs brimming over.

Let alone this beast from blue.

I think the idea baego is to NOT store but watch on the fly... I mean with that kinda capacity, who needs to store, just watch it whenever you like, wherever you like... and if you WANT to dl it, you can... in seconds...

Good LORD!!!! O_O

'Feature length' in this case is a 2-hour movie eh.
Just to put into perspective; TSTT DSL would take just over 26 hours
to download the same file (assuming a constant speed of 32kB/s).

WOW!!!

*almost faints when the amount of porn one can download in an hour at that speed is considered*

And yet they can't bring a single damn thing to market. I remember hearing a manager from IBM speak at school, and she was showing the kinda stuff they had going on. She pulled a talking PDA. It really had a basic conversation with her. It talked really well and understood what she was saying. Will I ever be able to buy that? no.
