cheaper highly overclockable core 2 duo incoming!

some of you remember the pentium D 805 - still a decent buy today being under $90 us at some stores. dual core, 20x multiplier, and low fsb made it a decent performer, and extreme overclocker. small changes in fsb caused speed to skyrocket.

welcome e4300

x9 multiplier, 800MHz fsb (200 base quadpump) total speed = 200x9 = 1.8GHz

not bad, pretty hard in fact to tell the difference between it and the current 1.86GHz e6300.

you lose VT support, but unless you're running parallel's you're not going to notice it - vmware workstation 5.5 was faster, even without it.

Anand overclocks the chip to 3.38GHz - fsb gain was lowish - 375 on the bus proportional to current core 2 duo's it's great (87% oc!) but it's low for core 2. Expect this chip to show up as a regular budget 100% ocer soon enough (boards like the p5b-e and the new 650i get near and above 500MHz fsb!)

most c2d boards can handle 300 fsb as a minimum, my p5w64 hits 450 easy. The new chip was also meant to relieve some ram needs, allowing decent speed 400/533/677 ddr2 to give decent performance.

Quote from: Anand article
Using Gigabyte's GA-965P-DS3 motherboard, our engineering sample was able to run at 3.375GHz (375MHz x 9.0) at 1.468V using a stock Intel cooler.

temps shouldn't have been too bad - power consumption looks lower than the x2 5000+ even after the oc.

Remember not all chips are made equal, and I am sure that alot of reviews get cherry picked CPUs so that the manu (be it DAAMIT, intel, nvidia, etc) get better performance than is the norm.

Actually wintry, for once your going to go down in flames.

TO date as far as c2d goes EVERY c2d chip has reached those claimed"cherry" picked results.

I mean I have a week 26 e6600 ( week 26 are renowned for being poor oc'ers, cause they won't go past 3.8 ) and can hit 3.5 ghz with out trying, on my board trini's e6300 was happy at 3.1!

C2D has oc'ed beyond what intel claims, if anything intel was conservative!  same thing goes for performance ( rememebr you saying the tests before release were "cherry picked!"

Sorry Winny but also temps of a E6300 @ 3.1 was still under 55c with the stock cooler and only used 75w of power ( tested and I can duplicate it and screen print the results AGAIN! )

MY E6600 @ 3.7 was 50c ( not stock cooler ) and 70w!

Hummmmmmmmmm

Face it, for once Intel PWNNS!!!!

My word you tell ppl not to be too disappointed if they don't get the creme de la creme and intelites try to rain down on you. Sheesh you guys, seriously if the new admin and itellites keep spamming up the threads it'll be the same as before management 'changed'. THat aside anyone notice I made it a point to specify NO MATTER THE MANUFACTURER..sheesh. Crixx seriously though, the spamming.

discussion aside, for ANY overclocking endeavor, Your mileage may vary.

that said, low end cores are excellent picks for cheapman overclocking, nudging out he previous top picks - 3800 x2 and 805.

It IS possible they had a cherry picker, but current oc's from boards on capable chipsets show a similar proportional increase in speed.

Overclocking is a chance, but with research, you can control the odds.
